Schools: Model vs Modest

Yeah!! I made a promise when I wrote the last time on what to do when your child/ward fails. The topic model vs modest has been on my mind for a while now, and I thought to share it. A model school can be seen as the creme de la creme of schools. They can be very expensive, but well structured. In such schools, everything needed for schooling including notebooks, texts, sports wear, writing materials, examination booklets, graph book, are summed up and presented as the school fees. The students of such schools resume with their teller indicating they have completely paid school fees. The advantage of this kind of system is that you will not need to bother about any other payments to be made. Standards are high, and the rules are well spelt out. Anyone not meeting up with the demands or rules can be expelled. A modest school also have high standards but are not as expensive as compared to a model school. Everything is also in order. But they don't yet have the name and prestige a model school has. At times, a modest school may offer more in terms of academics than a model school. We've had some of our students go to model schools and compared what we taught them with what they learnt there. To our amazement, we were not lagging behind but surpassed what they did.

I'm Currently a Basic Technology and Chemistry teacher in a Secondary school; Olumide Heights to be precise. I'll classify it as a modest school with well stocked laboratories for sciences, computers, texts and classes ranging from Junior Secondary School One to Senior Secondary School three. School fees for a term (which is three to four months) is roughly $55.

Here, I have seen teachers give more than they should. The Further Mathematics teacher; Mr. Stephen is exceptional. He works like a horse, even when tired. He teaches in depth and stretches the students beyond their normal capacity. He derives pleasure in making the students think through before answering questions.

I'm not left out. I derive pleasure in updating whatsoever I have taught before. Recently, during one of the topics I took the junior students in Basic Technology; Workplace Safety, I had to include what fire triangle is, fire diamond or tetrahedron, classes of fire, and types of fire extinguishers we currently have. There is one recent fire extinguisher known as water mist which can quench all the classes of fire.

Also, class E; which is known as electrical fire was recently unclassified because it ultimately leads to class A type of fire. I did same in Chemistry teaching the students the improved version of metals in the electrochemical series. I don't just prepare notes from texts alone. I search online for any recent development to the topic I am to take. I believe the students should be abreast of what it going on in the 21st century where they currently belong. It goes on and on.

When You can afford the money for a model school, please do. But where your income cannot sustain it, look out for a modest school with the same qualities of the model school you are aspiring to put your ward in. Here, you cut your coat according to your cloth, not necessarily size. It does no good for your kids to be sent home for defaulting on payments stance. But, on the other hand, do not put your ward in a school with little or no standard. It can affect their output enormously. Make enquiries about any school you are interested in from different individuals and from the school itself. That way, you will be able to tell if they can offer you your preferred service. Have a great day.
