K TO 12 PHILIPPINE EDUCATION SYSTEM : THE JOURNEY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER
SERIES 2 : THE K TO 12 CURRICULUM AND HOW IT PREPARE STUDENTS

The concept of the K to 12 Curriculum is that the additional 2 years in high school is to prepare the student for three (3) options upon graduation. These are :
Fit for employment (trabaho)
Be an entrepreneur (negosyo)
College ready (kolehiyo)
Yes, that is how the Department of Education formulated the curriculum of the Senior High School (SHS). It is designed to prepare the students of the three options.
- The ones who can’t afford college yet, can apply for employment.
It is a fact that not all can afford to go to college after high school graduation on a third world country such as the Philippines. It’s not a good fact that had been happening to the young talented and skilled Filipinos. One possible solution to the problem is that the graduates can look for a job and self-support their way to college. Unfortunately due to reasons like : they are not yet competent and are still minor, the students are hamper on the opportunity.
This is where the solution comes in through the K to 12 curriculum because Senior High School graduates are prepared to be competent for employability and about 90% of them are already of legal age upon graduation.
- Those that are good in business can start one on their own even when they are still schooling.
Filipinos are clever and hardworking. They always look into something to earn extra. This is one thing that can be developed with Senior High School students even during schooling. The curriculum is equipped with courses that expose them to entrepreneurship. I am handling a subject that requires them to produce as much as possible a unique product and they need to produce the product and can sell them to their classmate or schoolmates. Some groups decides to continue their business outside school that leads them to earn extra and help on their school requirements.
- Those who are financially lucky on the other hand can go enroll college right after graduation.
These are the students who are blessed to have the chance to have a more secure future. The only thing the need to think and do during Senior High is to focus on their studies and graduate from it because their college education is already secure.

All three (3) of these becomes doable and achievable because the curriculum of the Senior High School is equipped with all the necessary skills the students can acquire within the span of two (2) years of schooling. Each and every aspect of the curriculum is designed for the 21st Century learners and at the same time are learners centered base.

Having taught the Senior High School curriculum for the past 2 years, yes we had already our first batch of graduates last April 2018, I am now convinced that the change of education system is slowly proving its worth. Some of my own advisory students are now absorved on the companies they had their work-immersion with. We are now working on keeping track of the percentage of our graduates who are employed right after graduation and present it to the proper forum of proving that all three (3) options are feasible.
