EDUCATION CONCEPT IN 21st CENTURY

Globalization is the world without line and borders, human around the world has been related together with many kinds of specialization. They are connected and come from many different backgrounds, culture, and religion. Furthermore, they are becoming a global citizen that is mean global citizenship need global education. The education system must transform to confirm our world demanding nowadays and also teacher have to ready to receive globalization, racism, diversity, and social justice (Burbules, & Torres 2000). In an education system that we apply now should suitable to globalization to accommodate 21st-century skills which are to answer what real need nowadays. 21st-century skills are the ability of the human to adapt to the situation has occurred now. After the industrial revolution in the late 1700s, human development is growing so incredibly fast to make their lives more effectively and efficiently. With the human knowledge, they are successful created many new systems and tools to support human life, such as the new economic system, created a new transportation system with a machine and so on. The teacher needs to confirm the change of the world to create an appropriate learning lesson for the student.

Indonesia is a large country which is thousands of islands and people. Equally important it is also many tribes and cultural backgrounds there. Education put their critical position to keep this country united and growth. Since the colonial era, we receive an education system from colonialist. Colonialist manipulates the education to pursue system to support its occupation (Imron, 2008). Such us restriction of Indonesian language (Bahasa), restrict education only for certain groups, control the education only for their propaganda. After independence 17 Augustus 1945 Indonesia start their education system still influence by colonialist style. They still develop an education system to produce an employee to work in a factory, not to create a thinker who can change the world. Education seems similar as a robot factory to create a machine to work. Indeed there are many factories in Indonesia rather than laboratories.

In present, Indonesia as a developing country should develop education to confirm this changing era. Education should be built as a primary tool to be able to compete in the era of globalization and create the creative ideas to assist their country developing well and becoming a welfare state. Enable teachers and students become ready for 21st is complicated (saveendra, & Opfer 2012). But, we have a possibility to start it by easy stages. Based on general cited the University of Melbourne–based and Cisco-, Intel-, and Microsoft-funded Assessment and Teaching of 21 Century Skills (AT21CS) consortium—which includes Australia, Finland, Portugal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States—organizes 21 century skills, knowledge, and attitudes, values, and ethics into the following four categories:

First, the ways of thinking, it is related to cognitive of the student such our creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, metacognition, initiative, and curiosity. Second, the ways of working related to interaction with others such collaboration, participation, communication, leadership, adaptability, and teamwork. Third, tools for working it related to the capability for using some tools to support learning process such our general knowledge and information communication technology (ICT) literacy. Fourth, living in the world competence such us citizenship, life and career, personal and social responsibility, including cultural awareness. The real challenge is how we as education elements actualize and fuse it in every subject of learning in the school.

Important to realize 21st-century skills are how the teachers develop the ways of 21st century thinking to our teacher and student in practice. Teacher and student should have enough portions for developing their ways of thinking. Autonomy and independence to create a lesson plan for the teacher is an important part to develop it. Thus, that part must be supported by a good quality of the teacher. Recent studies explore that many new teachers unprepared to deep knowledge and the robust skills to respond 21st-century skills (Goddard, 2013). The teacher with good skill in pedagogic will have the creativity to improve student outcomes. According to McLoughlin, & Lee, 2008) there are three pedagogical principles for 21st-century instruction (1) Personalization, (2) Participation, and (3) Productivity. Contextualize in the learning process will increase student curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and metacognition. The fact proves that the student will increase their internal motivation if they learn something close to their lives. In physics for example if the teacher brings thermos bottle for subject thermochemistry it is more applicable to them when the teacher explains this subject into the real life.

Moreover, a student also should be trained have the chance to choose something. The teacher can provide alternative options for their work and support them in decision-making. It will be increasing their responsibility with their work. The students with many ways and options to pursue learning goals have an opportunity to learn in the other perspective and have their own style. The purpose of learning not to coloring the student with the same color, but, we should develop their own color in the correct thinking system. In contrary to Indonesia context the curriculum puts their concern extremely to student side in the learning process. For example, in our curriculum, the instruction strongly said “the student should do this and this, the student must pursue this and this, the students have to do this and this”, of course, it will put the student as a passive learner. They have no enough space to actualize what they want in the school subject. Encourage a student to be an active learner is more relevant rather than as a passive learner. They are not a robot, so we cannot just install them like a computer.

The ways of working also needed in 21st-century skill, it is about how we are connected with the other. Aristotle quotes human is social creatures which mean we as human need somebody else to improve our life better. Collaboration is not only among students but also with the teacher. School subject is connected each other and the teacher should have to consider it. Every part of learning materials come from one phenomenon, the world phenomenon. Collaboration between teachers will support a student to understanding well about world phenomenon. There are many types of research says that collaboration is one of the better ways to increasing students’ achievement. A student can work together in a group to create several projects in the school and when they go into the real life when they are an adult they will easy to work as a team. With collaboration will improve cross cultural understanding in a diverse classroom as well as Indonesian school. In a classroom in Indonesia we usually found that the students come from different backgrounds and language. To increase their understanding about other culture, religion, backgrounds and tolerance collaboration is the best way to know each other. Caring, balanced, open-minded, and communicator will also increase with collaboration.

Nowadays, we see that the successful invention because of the collaboration of human. High-technology was invented by many brilliant ideas of some people who working together. The group will motivate others to learn because they will shame if they are not contributing to the group. A positive social interaction such us collaboration, cooperation, teamwork is the important segment in increasing the way of working. Based on this positive interaction student will improve their oral communication skill and written communication skills. They will have equal reflection from their peers. On the other hand, teamwork and collaboration will decrease selfishness and individualism among the pupils. They will learn how to respect each other, learn how to be a good speaker and a good listener.
