Science focus - Light & color

Ever wondered why, in some color clothes, you feel a lot warmer than other colors?
You will be glad to know that their is a scientific explanation for this phenomenon and not primarily something else.

In the 40+ temperatures of Namibia this was something useful to learn, since I love wearing darker clothes but in truth I have to wear lighter clothes.

The science

White (lighter colored) surfaces reflects the wavelengths of light, where as the black and darker colored surfaces absorbs all the wavelengths of light.

You will need the following:

  1. 2 drinking glasses or jars.
  2. Water
  3. Thermometer
  4. 2 elastic bands or sellotape.
  5. White paper
  6. Black paper

Instructions:

  1. Take one of the glasses. Use one of the elastic bands or sellotape and wrap the white paper around the glass to keep the white paper around the glass.
  2. Use the other glass and then wrap the black paper around it.
  3. Fill up both glasses with the exact same amount of water.
  4. Put the glasses out in the sun for a couple of hours.
  5. After the time is up use a thermostat to measure the temperature of both glasses of water.
  6. Talk about your conclusion: The water with the black page around it is warmer than the water with the white page around it.
