Learning with Memory Techniques: The Periodic Table of Elements (61-65)

This is an easy way to learn Promethium, Samarium, Europium, Gadolinium and Terbium. Learning with memory techniques is much easier than rote repetition. Especially when the images are already layed out to you in a clear and intuitive way. We will cover five elements per post with special training images for all elements and numbers. Please check out our other episodes for more elements.

Elements Legend

Each element comes with a special training image. These contain the element number, a common application, a phonetically similar image for the name and the element symbol. The color of each training image indicates the element category.

The Major System for Numbers

To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
  • We encode digits into consonants
  • We pair the letters with phonetically similar consonants
  • Vowels are free to create words
  • Below on the graphic are the ten main letters

61. Promethium

In the Visual Major System 6 = G or K or hard C and 1 = T or D. With that we can create the word GOAT. The sixtyfirst element Promethium sounds similar like prominent which can be symbolized by a star of fame. This element is used in satellites.

A goat is licking a prominent star of fame which starts to lift off with the goat. It was an undercover satellite with a propulsion engine.

62. Samarium

In the Visual Major System 6 = G or K or hard C and 2 = N. With that we can create the word COIN (as in Bitcoin?). The sixtysecond element Samarium sounds like a good Samaritan. The element can be used for magnets in headphones.

samarium
A good Samaritan walks slowly down the street with headphones on his ears. He is smiling and throwing coins in front of all the people he passes by.

63. Europium

In the Visual Major System 6 = G or K or hard C and 3 = M. With that we can create the word GUM. The sixtythird element Europium sounds like Europe so we imagine the European flag. The element is used as fluorescent in banknotes.

Instead of using the European flag we can also just imagine Euro banknotes:
You just got a bag full of Euro banknotes and are cheerfully blowing up a bubble gum of joy. POP. The bubble bursts and covers your face. In that moment some steals your money.
Come up with your own story or ask your students to that.

64. Gadolinium

In the Visual Major System 6 = G or K or hard C and 4 = F or V. With that we can create the word Coffee. The sixtyfourth element Gadolinium sounds like a gadfly. The element is used as phosphorescence in radar dishes.

65. Terbium

In the Visual Major System 6 = G or K or hard C and 5 = S or Z. With that we can create the word GOOSE. The sixtyfifth element Terbium sounds like a turbine. The element is used for magnets in electric cars.

Thank you for your post.

We used to have more than 62 elements in our chemistry subject when i was in 12 it was hard to remember all of those, this technique is very helpful.

Imagine how fast you can learn the entire elements when this series is ready. And the same goes for other topics. Check out @flauwy and @yourmemorycoach for more articles about memory techniques.
