Dr. and Scientist Glenn J Doman. He is the founder of the Institute to develop human potential and was the creator of this novel method of teaching children to read from a very early age. He began his work with children who suffered brain injuries and eventually realized that these children were achieving a higher cognitive level than children, therefore he thought that the cognitive potential of healthy children was being wasted.

Doman considered that babies as young as a FEW MONTHS old could begin to understand letters and give them meaning , by THE FIRST YEAR they could begin to understand and read words , and when the corresponding early stimulation was applied to them, the intelligence of the babies was used to the maximum.

The method of early stimulation for reading , is one of the strategies that can be applied to children to develop to the maximum the cognitive potential of children, and in this way, they can already know how to read by the age of 3.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE TAMING METHOD IS TO INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO READING FROM THE FIRST MONTHS OF LIFE.

How does the Doman Method work?

This method consists of showing children "bits of intelligence". which are cards with words , and they keep these words in their knowledge and then understand at the same time the written and spoken language.

Recommendations:

  • Words should be written in large, red letters (The red color catches the children's attention, and they can see it.) The letters must be written on some material that has a white background.
  • Words should be displayed quickly three times a day.
  • This method should be applied in a playful way, and by pronouncing the words in an appropriate tone of voice that will catch the baby's attention.
  • Once the child has finished learning 25 words (they can't be more than 25 words), they should move on to the next phase.

This method is not a rigid method that demands, but rather a flexible one that can be adapted according to the children's capacity. It should be done so that the child feels it is a fun activity where they can learn.

This method must be done through five phases:

❶ Start by teaching them 5-word series of the same category that the children have heard before. EXAMPLE:

DOG, CAT, BEAR, COW LION.

❷ Form word pairs. EXAMPLE:

CAT-CRIMBLE.

MOM'S CRYING.

❹ This phase is the same as the previous one, but now you can start using articles to form complete sentences. EXAMPLE:

THE CHILD IS BIG.

❺ They should be read home stories that include the words and phrases that were learned in the previous phases. EXAMPLE:

In a house there lived a cute little kitten, who liked to play.

Babies have a high learning capacity because their brain is like a plastic that stretches to learn many things. Doman considered that learning to read takes the same process as learning to speak but in an easier way, because when speaking you only use the auditory medium and to read the audio-visual medium.
