What is high cholesterol ?
Before answering that question, we should know what cholesterol is.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood. The body needs cholesterol to build healthy new cells, and our bodies provide everything they need. However, we also get cholesterol through the food we eat, so that cholesterol levels in the blood become high and increase the risk of other diseases such as heart and stroke.

When the body has high cholesterol, there will be accumulation or deposit of fat in the arteries (Arteries are the main blood vessels that carry blood from the heart). This fat accumulation will make the blood difficult to flow through the arteries. This condition is called hardening / blockage of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

What happens when hardening / blockage of the arteries ?

The heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of heart attack. A decrease in blood flow to the brain can also cause a stroke. But the whole process is a very slow and continuous process, getting worse, as we age.

High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) can be inherited through offspring, but more often this condition is the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. Therefore high cholesterol can be prevented and treated. Diet / healthy diet and regular exercise is a powerful way to prevent high cholesterol.

Types of Cholesterol in the body

  • LDL is bad cholesterol. If there is too much in the body, this type of LDL cholesterol can clog arteries. This is the type of cholesterol you should avoid when experiencing high cholesterol
  • HDL is good cholesterol. HDL can help clean the fat from the blood. Having a high amount of HDL will be good for the body, and is associated with a reduced risk of heart attack.
  • Triglycerides are the other types of fats found in your blood. If you have high triglycerides and high LDL, you are more likely to have a heart attack.

High Cholesterol Symptoms

High cholesterol does not show symptoms, and does not make the body sick. Blood tests are the only way to detect high cholesterol. When you know that you have high cholesterol, cholesterol may have narrowed your arteries. That's why it's so important to check and do early prevention even when we feel okay.
