KGroup is Playing SteemMonsters! Progress and Issues
I have been playing @steemmonsters everyday, starting from just a Beta Starter Pack. I have had fun and made a little money! I recommend that YOU Buy a $10 Starter Pack at the SteemMonsters website.
Progress
There were glitches Sunday and Monday on the SteemMonsters website, and it made it nearly impossible to Battle. But once it was fixed, I won both daily quests and was rewarded with a 5 card Beta Booster Pack for each quest.
The first pack was unremarkable; just one rare. The second pack, shown below, had a rare and a gold foil card! Gold foil cards start at a higher level than regular cards and are more rare and hard to get. Therefore they sell for more in the SteemMonsters Marketplace.

Issues
As mentioned, the site had a server problem at exactly the wrong time because the two main creators of SteemMonsters were in Poland for SteemFest 3. There was a little communication on Discord but nothing on the site to explain the issue or estimated time to be back to normal.
This reminds me of something called key man insurance which is a way to financially keep a company alive if it loses a person or persons crucial to the operation. One way to mitigate such catastrophes is to delegate some authority and distribute some knowledge to others in the company.
Another issue is the match making algorithm. It can't be fun for either the winner or loser to spend any time watching an extremely mismatched battle. The outcome is known from the start. For example, my other account faced one of the top players in the game, with almost 10 times higher rating. Maybe when no other players are waiting for battles, it can be argued that at least a game can be played with a match like this. I'd like to wait a little longer, rather than meet this kind of imbalance.
There has been some discussion on Discord about the effect of bots / scripts playing games rather than actual persons. We have the same issue on Steemit with Votebots. It does add volume to the available battles, but it does seem that most of the bots are run by people with powerful decks, maybe part of the cause of the mismatch issue I mentioned above. @jeezzle mentioned that it would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut to get to the next battle faster, after one ends. That might be a small but helpful upgrade for us human players, and could slightly reduce the time difference between us and the bots getting to their next battle.
Another discussion on Discord is about the dilution of card value due to all the daily quest and season ending booster packs being distributed. Perhaps the amount of cards given out will change in the future, or maybe it won't be an issue if new players keep joining. Other ways to reward players are coming too, I would imagine.
No Complaints
I am very happy with the progress of the @steemmonsters project! A lot has been accomplished in a short period of time. The issues I documented above are minimal and something to be expected in a new venture. The game is fun and can be profitable if you do the daily quests and sell some cards, and if you blog about your gameplay on Steemit and use the upvote bot in Discord. Our cards could become more valuable as more people discover the game and want to buy and level up cards. No one can predict the future, but each card is a unique non-fungible asset and are in limited supply. I encourage you to consider playing SteemMonsters!
