SULAT BAYBAYIN

Ang Sulat Baybayin ay isang uri ng abugida o alfasilabaryo na sistemang pagsulat. Ito ay binubuo ng labimpitong (17) simbolo na inilalarawan ang mga idea ng mga ninunuo ng mga Tagalog o mga katutubo bago pa sila maging Filipino.

MGA KARAKTER AT DIYAKRITIK

Ang Sulat Baybayin ay may tatlong (3) patinig at labing-apat (14) na katinig.

Ang mga katinig, na binibigkas nang may kasamang patinig na /a/, ay pwedeng magbago ang tunog kapag dinadagdagan mo ng kudlit, isang diyakritik na marka sa taas o sa baba nito.

Ang tuldok /•/, singsing /ο/, gitling /-/, panipi / '/ atbp. sa itaas ng Baybayin karakter (katinig-patinig) ay lumilikha ng tunog na "e" o "i".

Ang tuldok /•/, singsing /ο/, gitling /-/, prime / '/ atbp. sa ilalim ng Baybayin karakter (katinig-patinig) ay lumilikha ng tunog na "o" o "u".

Noong 1620, isang Prayleng Espanyol na nagngangalang Francisco Lopez ang nagpasok ng virama na may anyong krus /"+"/ sa Sulat Baybayin (tingnan ang larawan). Ang virama ay tinatawag ding vowel-killer, kinakansela nito lahat ng tunog ng mga patinig.
