What is lightning and how are they produced? video for children

The lightning are a powerful electrical discharge, which occurs when there is a strong electrification of the clouds to the earth.

Therefore, can occur:

  • inside a cloud;
  • between adjacent electrified clouds, or
  • between an electrified cloud and the ground.

How are they produced?

The lightning discharge is preceded by the appearance of the electrical potential difference between the neighboring clouds or between the cloud and the ground.

Electrification, that is, the formation of the attractive forces of the electric nature, is well known to everyone from everyday experience.

If you comb your hair clean and dry with a plastic comb, begin to attract or even shine. After that, the comb can attract other small items, such as small pieces of paper. This phenomenon is called friction electrification.

A storm cloud is a huge amount of vapor, part of which condenses in the form of small droplets or ice floes. The upper part of a stormy cloud can be at a height of 6-7 km, and the lower part can hang above the ground at a height of 0.5-1 km. Above 3-4 km, the clouds consist of ice floes of different sizes, since the temperature is always below zero.

These pieces of ice are in constant motion, caused by the rising currents of hot air from the hot surface of the earth.

Thunderstorms are often impressive natural phenomena, however, they cause not only curiosity, but also fear.

During an electrical storm, electric shocks arise between the clouds and the Earth, which are clearly visible and audible: the rays are observed in the form of branched light lines that penetrate the sky, and a little later we hear the sound of thunder.

In this case, as a general rule, there is a heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and hail. The electrical storm is one of the most dangerous atmospheric phenomena.

The electric field of a cloud has a tremendous tension. When the large regions with opposite charge get close enough together, some electrons and ions, running between them, create a channel of luminous plasma through which the rest of the charged particles fall behind them. So there is a lightning discharge.

During this discharge, a huge energy is released. What results in the bright light we observe when lightning strikes. The clouds are constantly discharged through these channels, and we see external manifestations of these atmospheric phenomena in the form of lightning.

Can a lightning strike you inside a house?

Unfortunally Yes! A lightning current can enter the house through a telephone wire from a nearby pole. Therefore, when there is a thunderstorm, try not to use a normal telephone. It is believed that talking on the radio or mobile is safer.

During a thunderstorm, do not touch the central heating pipes or the water pipes that connect the house to the ground. For the same reasons, experts advise in an electrical storm to turn off all electrical appliances, including computers and televisions.
