Travel Diary Page #72 Why Its Not Safe Going Solo To Cheppara
Every time I decide to go for a trek in Poomala or Cheppara everyone in my family asked me to wait for them to join in the trip. This is the same for many beautiful destinations in my hometown. The reason is simple: Safety. Here is some hard truth about Cheppara which is a great place to spend time in nature but not really suitable for a solo trek.
Most times this place serves as the perfect spot for guys to come in groups and have a good time with the alcohol and well, sometimes get stoned. Even though the majority of the people here are nice and friendly the fights after getting drunk and police taking action against it are not so uncommon here. To add to that, the social set up doesn’t really approve females traveling alone.
No, weed is not legal here and there are mufti police roaming around the area. So, don’t go there for that. It is pretty easy to get caught. There is an excise office nearby and forest department on the way. But, as such the place is pretty isolated. And there is no constant watch above the rock nor is the place guarded by any security.
These are the reasons I always got warned for not going there alone. When I went there with my family, it was a great place to just sit and relax, take a deep breath of fresh air with a scenic view. However, there were sure many broken glass pieces in most places.
By the evening many families started to come there too as it was a public holiday. This is not always the case though.
So, if you want to go there alone, go before it gets dark in the evening which is before 6pm. There are small restaurants nearby, try to talk to them and let them know you are going there in a casual way. Always have the emergency numbers on your phone. Act according to the situation.
This is in no way to say the people who come here are all bad. But, there are some facts you can’t deny and I believe there is no point in risking safety for a bad experience.
I found it to be a safe place but not for a solo trek, not yet.
