70 years ago this week, from the June 21, 1948 feature "A NIGHT ON THE BEAT—A New York cop on a tour of duty in rough East Harlem runs into everything from family arguments to a knife murder." According to LIFE, "To get the story of a New York cop in his prowl car, Writer Joe McCarthy and Photographer Anthony Linck spent several evenings riding around with Patrolman James Murphy on his beat.
