Kinesthetic learning

Do you have any student, who can not tolerate, sit for a long time, read a book, say that the head is about to explode? At the same time, does it show the best results when it comes to physical activity, for example, games, sports, laboratory experiments? Then maybe it's kinesthetic.

Kinesthetic (tactile) learning is a learning style in which students acquire knowledge through physical activity, rather than listening to lectures or watching instructional videos.

Neil Fleming, a teacher and educational theorist from New Zealand, developed the VARK model (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, as well as information on reading and writing). According to her, kinesthetic students prefer physical interaction, because they better assimilate information based on experience. They succeed in specific circumstances: on-the-job training, internships, business case resolution.

If you are a teacher, you should pay attention to the characteristics of those students. And if it's kinesthetic, you can use the information in this article to study in the most effective way.

When learning is kinesthetic they prefer:

  • Role play: information is better absorbed if a scene is played.
  • Competitions: the sports component plays a great role for motivation.
  • Excursions: the kinesthetic are seen and played better than read and heard.
  • Projects: with the help of physical activity, these people learn much faster.
  • Laboratory tests, gymnastics and games in which the whole body participates will also be useful.
This is due to the fact that kinesthetics can not completely absorb knowledge if their bodies are not involved in the process. In this case, the information remains in the short-term memory, but it is not transmitted to the long-term memory, that is, it "disappears" immediately.

Tips for kinesthetic training.

Develop a range of tactile actions.

To begin, make a list of the skills you want to master. For example, it could be:
  • Learning English
  • Oratory skills
  • Time management
  • Performance skills
Acting, of course, is the most appropriate kinesthetic. But what if you want to learn English? So, perhaps, it's worth spending less time on grammar textbooks (although this should also be done), and more time to practice and communicate with other people. Also use flash cards, thanks to which you can learn new words, complete sentences and even rules.
In short, when mastering a skill, look for a variety of ways to apply tactile sensations.

Focus on immersion and interactivity.

If you continue with the example of learning English, you can:
  • Find apps for your smartphone that use gamification and interactivity.
  • Connect to learn photos and sound effects.
  • Simulate the right environment: decorate your room in a way that gives the impression that an English speaking person lives here.

Make learn emotionally.

Use:
  • Colors that evoke strong positive emotions.
  • Biographies of the people you admire. Also look for interesting examples of the lives of prominent personalities.
  • Words that arouse enthusiasm and motivation.
Remember that disappointment, emotion and stress are those conditions in which the quality of remembering information decreases several times.

Apply different styles of kinesthetic learning.

Kinesthetics can be divided into four groups:
  • Those who prefer practical tasks.
  • Those who love using their whole body to master the skill.
  • Those who prefer to learn with artistic skills.
  • Those who learn best when they involve emotions.
Of course, in each person in one way or another these skills are combined. Therefore, combine and perform experiments: express your creativity, participate in modeling and drawing (including scribbles), keep notes and visual notes.

Get out into the real world.

You, as a kinetic, do not need to devote much time to books. So, if you want to learn how to communicate with people, go to the public. Use different techniques, get comments, draw conclusions and learn from your mistakes.

Create joint group projects.

Kinesthetic, more than other people, loves teamwork. In it, they show their best abilities.

Therefore, if there is an opportunity, stop working with one hand and create a team project in which you have the opportunity to realize your potential through interaction with other people.

Perform experiments

This is the most interesting thing not only for kinetics, but also for many other people. What is an experiment in our case? You can think of a type of game in which there is a goal. For example, to inculcate some habits, you can completely change your daily routine for a whole month. At the same time keep a diary, describe your emotions and physical sensations.
