Science at home! Fun homemade experiments for the little ones. Today we will learn about Maxwell's Disc !!

Hello friends of @steemiteducation, a real pleasure to greet you after a few days, I was absent due to the energetic situation that is occurring in my country Venezuela where we spent long periods of time without light, but I could hardly make a publication for you as always dedicated to the Education of our children, today and wanted to bring you a very fun Home Experiment with which the children will entertain and play but at the same time learn.

This is Maxwell's Disc, so without further ado, let's start with the fun!

The disk of Maxwell consists of a wheel with an axis that passes through the center and that can be hung by means of a thread. The movement of Maxwell's disc is similar to that of the yo-yo.

Materials:

  • Thread
  • A plastic lid
  • Paste
  • A wooden stick

Procedures:

  • We will have a hole in the plastic lid in the center with enough diameter to pass our wooden stick.
  • We place it in the center of the toothpick and we stick it so it does not move and maintain balance.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
  • Then we take the thread and place it on both ends of our wooden stick and leave it with a sufficient extension that allows us to roll it up so that it can turn.
  • Then we put our Maxwell Disk on a base that is in the air and hanging so that we can wind the thread on our wooden stick and it can fall, as shown in the video.

If the disc is released we see how it falls turning on its axis. When the disc reaches the end of the thread, a rebound occurs and the disc ascends by rotating on the shaft.

What has happened?

When the disk falls, gravitational potential energy is lost by losing height that is transformed into kinetic energy of translation (due to the movement of the center of mass) and kinetic energy of rotation around the axis passing through the center of mass.

When the disc arrives at the end of the wire, the translational kinetic energy is transformed into elastic potential energy as the thread deforms an inestimable length. Then that elastic energy is transformed into upward translation energy when the thread recovers the normal length and the disc begins to ascend.

On the ascent, the kinetic energy of translation and rotation of Maxwell's disk is transformed into gravitational potential energy. The loss of mechanical energy by friction prevents the disc from recovering the initial height. The movement of the disc continues until all the energy is lost by friction.

As you can see, home experiments can be very useful when used as a teaching and learning tool, as parents we have the responsibility to offer our children the best education possible, for which we should look for the most appropriate strategies, our little ones They are full of curiosity and they love seeing new things and that is a point in our favor, the Cases of Experiments give us a universe of our knowledge. The opportunity to learn while having fun, just do not think about it anymore and put it into practice.
