Cultivation of tomatoes in pots (part 2)

in #steempress6 years ago (edited)

A big greeting to my friends Steemians, today I am going to show you how the growth and development of my potted tomato plant has been. It is necessary to remind you that 23 days ago I published about the transplant of a potted tomato seedling; At that time I told them that all plants, regardless of their quantity, require the same care, because each plant, whether in large crops or in a simple container or pot, requires an irrigation and fertilization program. The difference between the cultivation of many plants and those planted in pots, is that the pots do not use tractors to prepare the land or special equipment for fumigation and irrigation, but the rest, all need our care, it is necessary to be very attentive. . and monitor the plant to detect any disease or the presence of pests to take corrective measures at the time.

Development and growth of my tomato plant

  • Remember the previous publication: after 24 days of germination and with a height of 12 centimeters, we proceeded to transplant in pot.

  • *** Irrigation of the plant ***: The daily irrigations are carried out in the morning and in the afternoon, with the use of a manual household sprayer. We just have to keep the soil a little humid and avoid excess water, so that fungal diseases do not arise that cause the rot of the stem of the plant. These irrigations should continue until the end of the vegetative cycle of the plant, but we should always consider the soil moisture, for the reasons already

  • First fertilization: this is done 10 days after the transplant, foliar fertilizer with high content in phosphorus and low in nitrogen is applied, in addition I have added natural growth hormone prepared with lentils and sugar water.
  • Second fertilization: was done 15 days after the transplant, full foliar fertilizer was applied, plus growth hormone extracted from the lentils in soaks
  • Third fertilization: at this moment the plant has 44 days from the germination, and 20 days after the transplant, now I am going to apply granulated fertilizer formula NPK, I am going to place the grains in four points near the bands of the container. This fertilizer is slow-acting and dissolves with irrigation water; the amount that we should use is just a pinch of grains grabbed with both fingers, as seen in the photo.
Granulated fertilizer N-P-K:

Granulated fertilizer dose:

Colocar el abono granulado en cuatro puntos en cruz, retirado a 10 centímetros del tallo.

Preventive control of pests and diseases

So far, thank God, the plant has developed healthy and its height corresponds to age; It has a good bearing, with leaves of an intense green color and with a well formed stem. But even so we must take the preventive measures to avoid the attack of the plagues, in this case I have fumigated my plant adding to the water of irrigation an extract of the leaves of neem to move away the pests; Neem is an excellent insect repellent.

Here are several images of the growth and development of the tomato plant; I apologize for the improvised fence I had to do on the floor, because two days after the transplant, a funny cat almost destroyed my tomato plant.

Photo gallery of my tomato plant in the pot:

  • The plant 12 days after transplant
  • The plant at 15 days after the transplant.
  • The tomato plant at 18 days after the transplant:
  • The plant at 47 days after germination and 23 days after transplant, with a height of 30 centimeters.

Upcoming cultural work

  • Until now the tomato plant has 23 days after the transplant, and within two days corresponds to a first hilling, this consists of bringing soil to the stem, it is advisable to add only two centimeters of soil to the pot to strengthen the stem; and then within 15 days, we made the second hilling by adding two more centimeters of soil to the pot. I will use earth mixed with compost and earthworm humus.
  • The first pruning will be done after 35 days.
    • From now on, fertilizations will be done with complete foliar fertilizers, earthworm humus.
  • For flowering, we will reinforce the previous fertilizers with potassium foliar fertilizer.
I hope this information has been very useful so that you can plant your tomato plants in pots. Greetings.
