The cultivation of oregano and its medicinal properties

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

Hi, friends steemians, today I want you to learn to grow the oregano plant through cuttings, there is oregano with large leaves and small leaves, but I will only tell you about the oregano with small leaves. I know that most people know the oregano plant, because its leaves are important in the kitchen, as it is a special ingredient in the preparation of a variety of foods for its aroma and flavor.

Oregano is also used for medicinal purposes. But for those who do not know it, I'm going to give you some details about its morphology.

Morphological characteristics of the oregano plant.

The oregano plant (Origanum vulgare), is a shrubby plant, its height can reach 1.60 meters. It is a plant with a lot of foliage that can cover an area between 1 and 1.50 meters wide. Its leaves appear opposite, oval and wide between 1 and 3 cm, everything depends on the variety that is cultivated. The flowers are small, white or pink, and sprout at the end of the branches. Its main stem has a semi-square shape, from which many ramifications arise. It is a plant with abundant roots. The oregano plant can last a biological cycle between 8 and 15 years or perhaps a little longer, depending on the care.

How is the oregano plant spread?

The oregano plant is propagated by seeds or with the use of pieces of stems, which we call propagation by cuttings. The most common method for the reproduction of the oregano plant is by cuttings. It consists of cutting some stems of the secondary branches, preferably the newest ones and then rooting them.

Propagation of oregano by cuttings

This method consists in obtaining some stems from the branches, the process is carried out in the following way:

  • Cut pieces of branches about 10 cm in length, preferably from the new branches and much better if you notice some new shoots.
  • Clean the stems to be used, this consists of removing the lower leaves, we should only leave 3 to 4 leaves located on the top or tip of this piece.
  • Then we proceed to place the cuttings in a container with water, which can be in glasses or bottles, this is done to make them root.

  • When the roots arise, we hope that they reach an average length between 2 and 3 centimeters, and then we proceed to transplant, either in pots or directly on the ground.

Uses of Oregano

Culinary uses: Oregano is used as a condiment in many parts of the world, especially in Italian cuisine. It is a condiment that has a characteristic aroma and flavor that is easy to identify. Oregano is ideal for the preparation of a wide variety of sauces with tomatoes, which provide an excellent flavor ideal for pasta and pizzas. It is also used to season meats, salads, stews and soups, and is also used to prepare blends with other condiments.
