Charles Lewis Tiffany (February 15, 1812 – February 18, 1902) and school friend, John Young opened Tiffany and Young in 1837 With $1,000 Charles borrowed from his father, they set up a small stationery and gift shop in New York City. During Their first three days of business they sold only $4.38 in total sales, but two years later they were still in business, selling glassware, porcelain, cutlery, clocks and jewelry. As a direct result of Charles Tiffany’s efforts supporting this, a federal law requiring 925/1000 standard for an item to be marked “sterling silver” was passed here in America. In 1853 charles Tiffany took over as president and the name was changed to Tiffany & Co as we all know it today.

Tiffany & Co Under Charles the company grew and flourished, they added flatware to it’s range of products and in 1867 was the first American company to win the silver craftsmanship grand prize in the Paris Exposition, Tiffany & CO has also been the appointed goldsmith and jeweler for many European Royal families.
