Day 10 of What's in the box? 1939-45 medal.
After some couch time I'm back with another look into my grandfather's belongings. Tonight I'll show off another war medal: the 1939-45 star.
This medal was awarded for operational service overseas for 180 days between Sept 3rd 1939 and May 8th 1945. Source
Airborne and Airforce crew's were qualified for this medal after 60 days of service.
This medal is a yellow copper zinc alloy. Each colour stripe on the ribbon has its own significance: the dark blue stripe represents the Naval Forces and the Merchant Navy, the red stripe the Armies and the light blue stripe the Air Forces.
