Daily Coin# 139 A Well Worn 1885 Victoria 6 Pence
Something old , something new , something borrowed , something blue , and a sixpence in her shoe........ On January 15 1885 Wilson Bentley takes the first photograph of a snowflake . On the night of February 24 1885 in the North Pacific, the crew of the barque Innerwich en route from Japan to Vancouver , witnesses the sky turning fiery red, falling into the sea 50 yards away with a blast and hissing sound . Then a wave of white foam passes under the ship (perhaps one of the first UFO sightings). November 16 1885 Louis Riel , French Metis rebel who fought against Canada , is executed at age 41 . Here today we have a Queen Victoria British Silver "Young Head" Sixpence minted in London England with over 4.6 million others . It was struck in .925 % silver weighs 2.3 grams and is 19 mm in diameter by 1 mm thick .
The obverse shows us a portrait of a young Victoria facing left(first portrait 3rd type) surrounded by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D: (Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the British territories, Defender of the Faith) .
The reverse of today's coin features a crowned value (six pence)inside an oak and laurel wreath with the date (1885) below .
The edge of this well worn beauty is reeded .

It is funny that in 1885 we have a Young Victoria and ten years later all the coins have an Old Victoria portrait...
Yes it is funny they used the same portrait for 44 years !!
