# 126 - Elgin

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

Continuing our series of the American Half Dollars Commemoratives, we will today present the 1936 "Elgin".

As all the commemorative half dollars, it weights 12,5g with a 90% silver purity.

This coin commemorates the centenary of the founding of the city of Elgin, Illinois and the erection of the Pioneer Memorial. The fact that the centenary was in 1935 and that the Pioneer Memorial was never erected is apparently not important...

The obverse depicts the head of a man facing to the left (the head of the leftmost figure in the Pioneer memorial) and the date 1673 that has nothing to do with this coin...

The reverse shows the Pioneer Memorial, a group of frontier people who might have settled the area in 1835.

A total of 20,015 coins were minted and distributed. The actual price is around U$225.00 in this grade.

This series will continue very soon.

I enjoyed this article. This is pretty cool. I'll have to look up these for myself. Thanks as always for fantastic articles.

This series has some of the most beautiful coins and some of the most outrageous scams in the history of American coins.

This is an amazing and amusing story. Apparently, Elgin still has the original plaster sculptures that were created for the statue. Further, they still want to erect the statue.

What a Great Coin and in Great Condition too.......I Love the OLD PCGS Green Holders..."OGH"

The Green Holders are from a time when PCGS was stricter on assigning the grades. Many people destroy the slabs and send the coins back to PCGS, trying a higher grade.

Hahahaha, that is quite interesting. I wonder why the Pioneer Memorial was never erected and yet we have this design. It must have been based on the original design of the memorial?

This was another scam in this series. The Congress ordered the Mint to issue the coins and they were sold by the Organizing Committee, to erect the statue. The problem is that a great part of the money "disappeared" and the statue could not be erected.

Thanks for sharing this. I learned something new: namely that there is a coin honoring Elgin, Chicago. I am also interested in watches and a major American watchmaker was based in that same city.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin_National_Watch_Company

In 1936, time of the minting of this coin, The Elgin National Watch Company should have been at its heights. I wonder if they were scammed too.

Great point. 82 years ago was certainly a different era - but some things never change.

Elgin National Watch Company
The Elgin National Watch Company, commonly known as Elgin Watch Company, was a major US watch maker from 1864 to 1968. The company sold watches under the names Elgin, Lord Elgin, and Lady Elgin.
For nearly 100 years the company's manufacturing complex in Elgin, Illinois, was the largest site dedicated to watchmaking in the world.
