# 129 - Gettysburg
Continuing our series of the American Half Dollars Commemoratives, we will today present the 1936 "Gettysburg".
As all the commemorative half dollars, it weights 12,5g with a 90% silver purity.
This coin commemorates the 75th anniversary of one of the most famous Civil War conflicts, the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. The fact that this anniversary would be only in 1938 did not prevent the promoters to issue this coin in 1936.
On the obverse were depicted two busts, one of a Confederate and the other a Union soldier. The incription "Blue and Gray Reunion" was a reference for an event scheduled for July 1-3, 1938.
The reverse showed two shields, one representing the Union and the other the Confederacy, divided by a fasces.
A total of 26,928 coins were distributed. The actual price is around U$800.00 in this grade.

Wow! What a piece of history. Not only for the anniversary of Gettysburg but also for the Blue and the Gray reunion. It is amazing how both of these events really weren’t that long ago.

WOW, a sad battle. I feel very sad always when I read about the US Civil War. A great coin to collect. I think, and if I remember it, I will try to get me one, just to have.
It was one of the few Half-Dollars Commemoratives that had an historical national meaning to be issued.
