# 224 - A Thessalian Stater
The Thessalian League was a loose confederacy of feudal-like city-states and tribes in the Thessalian plain in Northern Greece.
It was there that this coin was minted in late 2nd-mid 1st centuries BC.
It is an AR(silver) Stater weighting 5.98g and with 20mm diameter.
Its obverse shows us a laureate head of Zeus facing right.
The reverse depicts Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm.
The price of this coin is around U$250.00.

I always wonder what happened with this coin. What did it buy and how it arrived to your hands after travelling through space and time.
I bought it in an internet auction, around 2000. Of course the seller was a very trustful one.
That is a really old coin. That's cool you were able to get your hands on one. I was browsing through some of the ancient coins online, but they're out of my price range for now. Congrats to you though!
I bought almost all my ancient coins between 1995 and 2005. The prices did not change much from that time to today.

Is it a set of coins you got together with that theme or did you collect them specifically to create an Athena collection ?
I bought them along a few years just to create an Athena collection. I read Greek mythology since I was a child and Athena was always my best loved goddess.

A small coin, more than 2,000 years old. If you study it, you will find a whole book behind it, as it happens with all ancient coins.
