# 241 - Basketball Half Dollar

Continuing the Modern Commemoratives Half Dollar series, we will present you today the 1995-S "Basketball" graded by PCGS PR70 DCAM.

All coins of this series weight 11.34g with 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. They were issued in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted.

This coin was part of ambitious coin program issued for the XXVI Olympiad Summer Games held in Atlanta, Georgia.

The obverse of the coin was designed by Clint Hansen and modeled by Alfred Maletsky. It shows a scene in a basketball match.

The reverse of the coin features the symbol for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in the center of a map.

A total of 169,655 coins were minted in San Francisco. The issue price was U$12.50. The actual price is around U$475.00 in this grade.

As I said in other comment, I like sports on coins and the Olympic Games are a wonderful occasion to issue series of sports on coins.

Since the Summer Olympics of Helsinki, Finland, in 1952, the hosting country issues coins commemorating the games. A few years ago other countries started issuing coins about sport events that were not realized on the country. As an example, USA issued a commemorative coin relative to the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea.
