# 276 - 2018 2 Euros Commemoratives - Part 1

in #steemsilvergold5 years ago (edited)

I love commemorative coins and, a few years ago, I discovered that the Euro Community was minting commemorative coins.

Each country has the right to mint up to two coins each year. They must be 2 euros, with the same face of a normal 2 euros coin and the same attributes and aspect.

The minting country uses the other side to show us what it is being commemorated. They circulate exactly as the normal 2 euros coins.

The only exception to the rule of two coins each year is when they commemorate facts that affect the whole Europe. In this case the countries are allowed an extra coin.

They are Bi-Metallic Nickel-brass clad Nickel center in Copper-nickel ring, 8.5 g.

When I was visiting my daughter in Spain I bought fifteen 2018 commemorative 2 euros coins and I will show them in a series of articles, with no specific order.

The first is a 2018 2 euros from Latvia commemorating the 100th anniversary of the independence of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). We see the coat-of-arms of the three countries.

The second is a 2018 2 euros from Austria, commemorating the 100 years of the Republic of Austria. We can see a detail of the statue of Pallas Athena that stands in front of the neoclassical Parliament building in Vienna. Pallas Athena serves as a symbol of Austrian parliamentarianism and signifies knowledge, reason and strategic ability.

The third id a 2018 2 euros from Portugal, commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda (Portugal's coins and banknotes issuer)

This series will continue very soon.

I hope you have enjoyed this article.

I like the fact that they not only commemorate but they are circulating coins. Are the prices for uncirculated coins much more expensive than 2 euros?

Depending on the country, I paid 3, 4 or 5 euros for each coin.

Some of the 2 euro coins are really nice, some of them can be quite expensive.

Yes, the price for Vatican commemoratives are very high, for example.
