The Steem Sister Show - Episode 24 // Higher Education - Part Two!

in #steemsistershow6 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the 24th episode of the Steem Sister Show!

Your hosts are @coruscate and @maryjaney. We are two sisters using the Steem blockchain to chat about our life experiences and provide a little entertainment value to the Steemit Community.

Topic of this Episode – Higher Education - Part 2

We got SO many amazing questions for part one, that we decided to split this episode into a two-parter! My friend @larrymorrison actually emailed me 4 incredible questions, and we just couldn't choose - so here they are!

In part one, we got a little bit more into our specific educational stories and chatted a bit about higher education's changing role in society. In this episode, we over some of that - but go much deeper into the topic of student debt and the surrounding cost of college.

Here are the questions covered this week:

  • Tell us about your approach to paying for college.
  • Audience question #1 from @felix.herrmann – Do we really need colleges? You can learn so much on your own from YouTube and the internet.
  • Audience question #2 from @felix.herrmann - Do you think too many people are in college? We need good plumbers.
  • Audience question #1 from @larrymorrison - Besides the staggering cost of higher education, what is the one thing you would like to see change?
  • Audience question #2 from @larrymorrison - Do you think free college is a good idea? Why or why not?
  • Audience question #3 from @larrymorrison -Based on what you have been through or what you see happening in our country today what would you do to warn highschoolers about higher education?
  • Audience question #4 from @larrymorrison -To piggyback off of #3, what would you like to see shift in high school to improve higher education?

Wow, thanks for all the great questions you guys!

What is the Steem Sister Show All About?

We aim to bring more “non-crypto” related content to the Steem Blockchain. Although there is nothing wrong with this kind of content (@corsucate even posts on crypto related material sometimes) – we want to help create a better onboarding experience for new users. We talk a lot about attracting new users to the platform – but if the trending page is filled with crypto posts and flagging wars, they are likely to lose interest quickly.

We hope that by creating content that is more similar to what they are used to seeing on other social media sites – they will feel more excited about being here and creating content of their own!

How Does It Work?

We pick a different topic every episode, and then throw totally random questions about that topic in a hat and go back and forth. We always have a mix of our own questions and some audience questions. Our rule is that we cannot tell each other our answers before filming! So you guys are getting our raw, unfiltered reactions here.

Every episode we announce the next week’s topic so people can submit questions.

Want to win some SBD??

If we chose to answer your question in the next show… we will send you 2 SBD! Now that’s some easy money.

Next Week’s Topic :Restaurants

In next week's episode - we will be chatting all about one of our favorite topics - food. More specifically though, we will discuss our views on fast food, what kinds of restaurants we like, what we look for, what is a deal breaker etc.

I think you guys already know that there will probably be loads of sushi references.

If you would like the possibility of winning 2 SBD - please submit your questions! Anything on the topic of restaurants is fair game.

PLUS... if you have your own money saving hack you'd like to share - feel free to leave that below! We'd love to get as many great ideas together as possible to discuss on our show next week.

Listener questions always end up being the best ones - so thank you in advance to everyone who submits one!

That’s a Wrap!

We hope you enjoyed watching part two of our Higher Education series! We really enjoyed chatting more about this topic - so thank you to everyone who submitted such great questions between both episodes.

If you have any thoughts or questions that came up from this episode – feel free to shoot them in the comments below.

With Love,

The Steem Sisters

This was so awesome, first off, thank you so much for the shout out, for using my questions, and for letting everyone know about my mild-mannered alter ego of being one of the leading experts in the field of student debt.
I absolutely loved the idea of having a "Life Impact" calculator for high schoolers to help them select schools to see how their school selection will change their lives financially. I'm keeping that one!
Really interesting the topic @maryjaney brought up about the "Gap Year," in other countries, this is almost mandatory and really gives a person much-needed life perspective. Only recently have we began studying its effects here in the states.
I'm not saying college "should" be free however I will find a way to finance it that doesn't involve higher taxes or taking away from other programs 😎
Great show, much appreciation and love to you both! 😊💖
P.S. Lea, I'm super passionate about teaching financial education in school as well and have found some interesting data to back up the reasons why it is so needed, besides the painfully obvious ones.

Thanks again for the awesome questions - it definitely sparked some great discussion! It's funny because I had never really thought of the "life impact" calculator either - it just kind of came out in the show while we were talking about it. :)

I also loved Mary's suggestion for a gap year to get your footing as an adult, learn the value of money and learn a bit more about yourself and what you want. It's so crazy to me that we have a societal expectation that people will "know what they want to do" when they are so young and are still being taken care of by their parents.

It's funny that you mention the free college piece because when re-watching my own reply to that, it really struck me that I need to spend some more time thinking about that topic. I thought my response was a little scattered and not all inclusive of the complex topic that it is!

Awesome that you have some data to back up the need for teaching personal finance in schools. I know Dave Ramsey has a program for students and is having more and more of his classes taught in schools - but that's still just a small overall fraction of the school system.

“Government is the anti-thesis of efficiency.” Good one @coruscate :)

Haha I don’t lie. 😜

The second question is very curious, I've learned more on the internet that I've actually learned in school, but there are some subjects that you can't find on the internet or there's not enough information, plus studying indoors sometimes can be really exhausting (I can tell from my own experience). That was a good question!

I have two questions for the next episode

  1. If you could only choose the gastronomy of one country, which one would you choose?

  2. Do you think that Western restaurants modify foreigner dishes to add a more "local" taste so that people like it?

(for example fried Japanese food that is not Japanese because they don't fry food, lol)

Thanks for the awesome questions @ralk98!! It's funny that you mention fried Japanese food because sometimes I really enjoy getting a deep fried sushi roll. hahah

Food question... What do you normally order on your Chipotle burrito / bowl and why? I probably eat there way too often 😂

oooh great question!! Thanks @kenmelendez!

Really nice.......................

Hey Girls , they are very funny, I hope to keep watching them, they make me laugh a lot !!

Saludos desde Venezuela!!
