Are You A Silent Murderer Of The Earth?

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

Are you one individual who constantly dreamed of trekking up to the frosty-white glacier mountain, thought of being on top of the world? If yes, your chance to make your dream come true is running out. The accelerating global warming is a silent killer that is gradually vanishing your dream, leaving you nothing but the repercussions of your action.

Over the decades, glaciers are experiencing a dilemma across the world. The amount of fresh snows are inadequate to sustain the melted ice nor capable to maintain the size of a glacier. The alarming rate of glaciers melting are frightening many geologists but, people choose to ignore this issue. One of the major causes is the emerge of global warming. I suppose many of us know what is global warming and how it affects us. The common side effects like, volcanic eruptions, extinction of animals, and the decline in water resources is not a surprise anymore. But, you might not know that the impact of melting glaciers are far more serious than we expected. What lies beneath these ancient compressed thick ice mass is what we are more afraid of and to pay more attention!

Throughout the history, humans, and bacteria live under the same roof, inhaling the same air, and has always been there since the first day we ever existed. Viruses and bacteria such as hepatitis, common flu, pox, to severe bacteria like MRSA are living among us. Thanks to the advanced science and technology, we've evolved to resist them from infecting us. The battle between microbes and mortals have moved to a conciliate phase, thanks to the remarkable invention of penicillin. However, a war is most pernicious when we are exposed to sudden strikes, and we have absolutely no idea what comes next.

The continued change of climate due to global warming has raised several issues, one of them is the melt of the glacier. Leaving the permafrost soil that was deposited deep down the earth over a few millennia years ago to be brought to light out of a blue. This paradox constitutes an impact on all living organism to be vulnerably attacked by these anonymous viruses to resurface on the water and spring back to life.

So, what is permafrost?

In layman term, permafrost is ground covered by ice. Permafrost exists beneath a layer of soil and sediments, topped by a layer of ice that freezes and thaws annually. This layer is called the “active layer”. In science, permafrost is presumed to be the best to preserve microbes and viruses in the absence of oxygen and it is dark. Permafrost is a ground that freezes below the freezing point of water at 0°C in high latitudes. When the global temperature rises 1.5 °C above the current levels of 0.9°C, these deadly ice will start to thaw.

In recent years, glazier melting soared an intense topic among expert due to the death of a 12-year-old boy died after being infected by anthrax. According to BBC report, the cause of this tragedy due to the resurfacing of anthrax viruses that are trapped in the permafrost. In the summer of 2016, the heatwave causes the permafrost to thaw, forcing the carcasses of an infected reindeer with the same diseases to reemerge. The exposed germs and viruses spread into the nearby water, and eventually, slipped into the food chain. This incident led to more than twenty people to be hospitalized with the same infected condition.

This unusual phenomenon raised a warning for everyone to be aware of. To go further into this topic, the question you and I should ask is, what else can be concealed beneath these lands?

For an instance, a long-gone disappearance of microbes was revived from a frozen pond in Alaska. For these millennium years, all we know is that what’s gone is gone. We forget and moves on. However, these thirty-two thousand years old of a pond that seems to be calm and pure lies a deadly secret behind it. An 8 million-year-old of the bacterium was resurrected from the ice of the Beacon glacier at Antarctica. To read more about the bacteria, click here

These unusual findings put us in a position where we need to think twice about what have we done to this world. Global warming shouldn’t be taken lightly, every move we make contributes a difference to this world. These precautions can be carried out easily starting from your home, like to invest in energy-efficient appliances to reduce emissions, better bulbs, or having the courtesy to pull off the plug when it’s not in use.

Change your behavior and thinking to a more environmentally friendly approach. Reduce the use of a vehicle by carpooling or riding a bicycle sounds like a good idea. The fumes emission from a vehicle is the biggest pollution contribution in the world. Cutting down these consumptions of oil and gasoline is a crucial step to reduce energy wastes.

Ask yourself, are you a part of the murderer?

Be a responsible human being, save the earth!

I knew about those diseases resurfacing.
Interesting to maybe sequence some old viruses and bacteria, dangerous for the people being exposed and sad that we are not able to maintain our world like it was given to us by our ancestors.

Thanks for bringing it up!

It's such a shame that we are all busy running after our goals and chasing after the time. But, forgot to take a step back, to think about the environment and fails to see the bigger picture of the future. Guess that's human nature.

This is not the first time I read about old viruses coming back to life after spending so much time being frozen.

But this is something we will have to deal and I am sure this problem will be contained.

But in its beginning I am sure it was something unexpected realizing we would have to to face diseases that literally are from another era.

Thanks for sharing this!

That's true, we definitely need to find a way to deal with this. First thing to do is to think twice what we needed to change to prevent this from happening.
