Discussing the importance of music to science

in #steemstem5 years ago

Oh how I love music. Aside from the scientific importance of music that I would be sharing with us. I think that music is completely amazing. I enjoy different types of music, from Afro music, to classic music, to country side music (I love Taylor Swift's music), i don't know if you know her but I think her songs are really good.

I also enjoy RnB music, I listen to Usher Raymond, Chris Brown and the likes. I love Electronic Dance Music (EDM). I listen to raps as well. Of recent, I've found myself listening to a lot to nice instrumentals. Sometimes listening to just nice instrumentals without anybody singing on it could be really a fantastic experience.

I'm going to be discussing with us about the importance of music in science. So let's learn one or two things together. Are you ready? Ok, let's go...

Music helps to reduce pain

Hmmm. I know you want to read more now. The truth is that in this modern day world, pain has become a part of most people's lives. Especially for those that are truly working hard in order to reach great heights. It's no surprise why the pharmaceutical industries are making so much money from sales of painkiller drugs.

I don't know if you've heard about fibromyalgia before. It's a disorder that causes the people suffering from it to feel so much pain. Research has it that music to a great extent helps reduce the pain that patients with fibromyalgia feel.

Music is very helpful in increasing movement and the overall functioning in patients with this condition. The fact that music could actually be useful in treating patients with such a critically painful condition, what about other people who are without this condition. If you're feeling pain, you should consider listening to your favorite music.

Music helps relief stress

Listening to cool and calm music may help to bring down your cortisol levels. The cortisol is a hormone that is released in the body when you feel stressed.

Research has it that music helps relief stress in children that are being treated. If you've noticed, children feel a lot of stress and tension during IV insertion (Intravenous).

But it's been found that when children are given calm and cool music to listen to, children experience very reduced stress during IV insertion, when compared to children who aren't listening to any music. What does this tell us? It tells us that music has a way of helping us relief stress and tension.

Music helps memory

I'm pretty sure that you have noticed that listening to some songs takes you back to a particular period in time in your life. Like for me, anytime I listen to the great Micheal Jackson, I get to remember all the crazy dance moves I learn watching his videos when I was younger. In fact, some of his songs still give me the urge to break dance. I'm sure most of us can relate to that.

Music touches our emotions in a way that only very few things can. Memories that are long lost may be instantly recovered by a particular music.

And that's why it comes to me as no surprise that music is being used to treat patients with Alzheimer's disease. It's been found that music can actually improve the memory of patients with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

Music helps patients with stroke

Music has been found to help patients with stroke recover quickly. It's really very important that a patient with stroke should begin to listen to music at the early stages of the stroke. This is because, it's been found that at the early stages of stroke, there are a lot of changes going on in the body.

Also, there's a singing therapy aimed at helping stroke patients recover quickly, it's referred to as the Melodic Intonation Therapy. This therapy involves the patients singing with the aim of helping them learn how to speak again.

As strange as it seems, most stroke patients who cannot speak well, actually can sing very well - almost as though they didn't have stroke. Hence, this therapy would help them learn how to speak well again. This is a very wonderful use of music.

Hi, I too am a lover of music and over the years, I've come to realize how much music can affect an individual. Although I didn't know of its application in the treatment of Alzheimer's - nice job. Sounds generally, have vast range of effects on an individual. Monks despite their strict vegetarian diet and schedule, they hardly get sick, because of the sounds they chant. These sounds aside the relevance to their worship, help strenghten and rebuild their bodies in some way. Was a nice read, Thanks 😇

Music and sounds in general, have very great effect on individuals. It's important to use it to one's advantage, like monks do. Its application in science is also amazing. I think we are only scratching the surface. In the future, I pretty sure that the application of music in science would increase, even beyond our greatest imagination. It's good to know that you found this post a nice read.
