YOUR MOOD, YOUR APPETITE

Mood refers to one’s state of mind at a particular time. A person’s mood can be understood from his posture and other behavioral patterns. For instance, he can exhibit a happy mood when he sees an old friend or a sad mood when he’s bereaved.

Appetite on other hand is the desire for food. It can be explained as a conditioned response to food. Recent research reveals that our food choices are subject to being dictated by our mood as well as our appetites.

We experience diverse moods daily, and it’s important to know that our diets and appetite sometimes take a hit because of these moods. While some people considerably lose appetite when they are happy or busy, some find comfort in ‘binging’ (a compulsive consumption of food or drink) when they’re sad. Some have no appetite at all when they’re sad or depressed.

Many times, our mood is affected by the food we eat and the kind of food we eat is dependent on our mood. The question then is, how do we avoid indulging in excessive consumption of food when we’re in a good mood? In the long run, this may result in varying degrees of health problems. Should we starve ourselves when we are sad? This could also result in stomach ulcer or malnutrition?

If you have the tendency to binge when you’re sad, learn to restrain yourself by thinking about the consequences of gluttony. Ask yourself ‘do I really need to eat more?’

If, on another hand, you tend to starve yourself or lose appetite. When you are blue, why not try exercising instead? This will give your brain something else to focus on, and that will subsequently make you hungry.

Try healthy snacks or fruit and eat them slowly. By eating slowly, your brain tells you when you are full quicker and prevent you from overeating. Also, try having a glass of water, even when you think you are hungry, sometimes, it could just be an indication that you are dehydrated and the glass of water would suffice.
