Slippery Jacks!

These have been popping up all over the place. They're an edible member of the boletes family and kinda hard to justify foraging for eating. In order to enjoy them you have to get rid of the slimy top and the sponge underneath that it uses to spread its spores.

On top of that, you will have a hard time finding enough for a meal. They go bad very fast, and usually by the time you find them they've got gross things inside of them.

They can get pretty big though! If you're lucky you can find a dinner plate sized one that hasn't gone bad. One will be enough for a big meal.

I also found some shaggy manes. Apparently they're pretty good but they go bad super fast.

It's amazing what you find when you're paying attention to what's on the ground.

Dude! I'm really diggin' your new found fascination with the mushroom hunting! Too cool! We should go out soon here -- maybe some time this weekend.. You need a hand moving?

Whoops.. Wrong account apparently.

My husband likes to forage for mushrooms and I went with him a few times. I definitely do not have an eye for spotting them but it is really cool to see all the different mushrooms in the woods. Those slippery jacks look so neat and the caps look as if someone has spilled some jelly over them. Based on your descriptions, I would definitely skip eating them. Nice post @somebuttstuff.
