...lightning bolts work like nature's particle accelerators?
In each strike electrons crash into gas molecules in the atmosphere. That way plasma glowing blackbody radiation is produced. We can only see the visible light of the lightning but it's in the invisible rays that wonders can happen (and by wonders I mean nuclear fission).
