Very detailed write up as always.
But this part tho:

Aren't they both very different elements? How are they interconvertible?
Hydrogen is merely a proton. Helium has two protons. So if you could get two hydrogen atoms to fuse, you could have yourself a helium nucleus and it is the nucleus that matter in nuclear reactions :)
