C H A P T E R | 11
“No. No, you can’t be.”
“It’s me, Thomas—I swear!”
“You are such a liar! Thomas would never do anything like this to me!”
Tears fell from James’s face harder now.
“You can’t be—Thomas would never h-have left me.”
“I didn’t have a choice-”
“J-just stop.” I buried my face in the bedding once more. I felt a hand gently rest on my back. I pulled away. He is lying.
He must be lying. I sat up and wiped the tears from my eyes.
James’s face was red. He reached over to the side table, grabbed a tissue, and blew his nose. He shook.
“How can I know for sure you are Thomas and that this isn’t another lie?” I asked calmly.
James looked away. His eyes raced around. He seemed deep in thought. His eyes lit up suddenly, and he looked at me.
“Remember when we had that picnic next to the lake—I thought it would be so romantic. It was a beautiful, calm day. I laid out a quilt and arranged flowers and candles around it.”
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“After I got everything set up, I picked you up and drove you out to the picnic I had set up for us. You remember what happened when we got there?” James smiled.
I laughed and sniffled. I nodded and looked at him.
“The picnic blanket was in a tree, the candles had melted from the sun, and the flowers had blown around,” he said.
James and I both laughed.
“It was still a perfect day, though,” I said, reminiscing.
James’s smile widened. It was him—it really was Thomas.
I had so many questions, but my love for him rushed back to the surface so swiftly that I couldn’t help it. I leapt onto the bed and wrapped my arms around him. I cried. I had missed him so much it hurt.
“I love you,” he said. “And I promise, I will explain everything.”
