I've lived all my life on the cacao plantation, I grew up climbing the under-story trees to harvest their ripening fruits before the rodents could take their turn. I was 16 before I even left the plantation, to accompany the other men into town for supplies. I've lived here all my life.

I've watched as our income has fallen, relative to the cost of the supplies we need to bring in. As the mana that powers our machines has become scarcer and more expensive. Our cacaotero community will not survive another season without a change, this is known to all here, and the trend line isn't heading in our favor.

The shady undergrowth of the tropical cacao plantation has been my life.

There is an expectation, someone in the community must bring back more mana before long. If we cannot power our machines to process and roast the cacao, there is no use defending it from the rodents. Someone must go.

And I suppose that among the community, there are children too young, and wizened elders too old. The engineer and the teacher couldn’t possibly leave their posts and I suppose the women are content to see which man decides to go. Everyone seems to have a plausible reason to stay, except me that is….well, me and Brody.

Our elders share the cross-generational wisdom of different types, mostly relating to cacao

We’ve been eyeing each other, Brody and I, as the rainy season draws to a close, and the paths get to drying and becoming more stable and the time for someone to leave approaches. I suppose he can do the same calculation in his head, no one will say who must go, but there are expectations.

On the third growing moon after the wet solstice, I pack my things. I won’t make a big announcement, I can’t stand to hear the relief in their faces as they realize that they have forced me out; I love them, that is why I must leave them.

As I creep out of the north side of the planation’s barracks in the early morning in the twilight before dawn, I get swept by a wave of nostalgia, and I turn and look back. Soon this gaggle of huts, my community, will be out of sight, and I take a moment to savor the last bit of warmth that comes from being in a place where one is recognized and accepted.

As I stand, breathing deeply the chill morning air, I hear a rustling of feet. From the corner of my eye I see movement, as I turn sharply to face whatever oncoming threat that chooses to challenge me before my adventure can even begin.

'I didn't think you would leave so early', a voice hisses out of the darkness. I immediately recognize it as Fanny, a friend and companion; of all the members of the independent cacao cooperative community, Fanny could have been a possible match for me, if things had worked out differently. She was neither annoying nor abrasive, both interesting and useful. She also had learned some of the elders cantrips which had come in handy when accidents occurred on the far reaches of the plantation...

‘You don’t think you can make it anywhere and back on your own, do you?’ she asked, pulling me out of my thoughts and back to the early morning light.

‘Hmmmm, I suppose I hadn’t yet thought about coming back….’

This is an entry to the Chibera character contest, where we are basically building out some possible back stories for different characters as we prepare ourselves mentally for the alpha release of Chibera!

What is Chibera, you ask? It is a revolutionary new MMORPG game that is being developed, with all the power of the steem economy built in!

Come on over to the Discord channel where we chat about all things from blockchain to gaming, and beyond!

We're going to have some fun together!

Yes indeed! You are so prolific!

At first I thought you were really speaking about yourself, and since you lived there your whole life, how is @snook your mom?? I understand now, just a little slow today lol!

Wow I'm glad that the writing drew you in :)

I tried to make it flow like a diary entry....

So happy you stopped by, I'm also trying to get @snook to do a creative character story because I think she would do amazing at it!

You aren't alone, @snowpea, as I was thinking the same thing at the beginning of the story! In fact, I scrolled back up to make sure I was on @ecoinstant's post, then I thought about how his wife is gonna kill him for writing about a girl name Fanny, and then saw the telltale "story" category! 😁 Great job on this! Very entertaining and engaging, and I want to read the next chapter! 😊

I agree, I was like wait..... what?..... somebody's posting on his account....
@ecoinstant nicely done.

Interesting story.

I like the way you reacted towards the end of the story. You realized it was time to leave and you ultimately left for good.

Thanks for stopping by! How have you been?

Av been doing great dear friend just that I havent been chanced to show up online more often for the past few days.

And I was amazed cause I could find my name in the latest released curation engagement league.

How about you?

@ecoinstant,

Alex, I thought it was auto-biographical at first! And 16 before ever getting off the plantation ... @snook, tough Mom. :-)

Very well written. I flows beautifully. Easy and smooth. I was fully prepared to read on and on. You've got novels in you brother. It felt like the beginning of a Hemingway novel ... so stay away from shotguns. :-)

Quill

LOL! Great to 'see' you Quill Fire!

Thanks for stopping by, it actually inspired me to stop by your blog, and I got sucked down a rabbit hole. So here I am, days later, finally responding!

@ecoinstant,

I'm taking a small break from my How to Fix Steemit Series for the sake of mental health! Good Lord, you'd think I was proposing taking people first borns.

Anyway, I'm going to post a couple of articles about something uplifting in an effort to remind myself that I ought to like other human beings ... then it'll be back to the dregs and drudgery of blockchain governance.

BTW ... I've got you on my GinaBot notifications. Are you on speed or something? The last couple of weeks ... you're EVERYWHERE! How are you doing it? No sleep only accounts for half! :-) You're making the rest of of look bad.

Quill

Well you are off to a good start my friend. At first I had thought you were actually talking about yourself. I can picture you as this person!

Hehehe it's immersive fiction! I see you've made some dlive videos, I haven't yet but look forward to checking them out!

Thanks for stopping by Skip!

Great writing! What an interesting backstory and surely an exciting adventure to come! :)

Thank you! From a creative author such as your self, that means a lot :)

Love how the pics fit in so perfect with your story. Looks like it was fun to write. Do you think you will be doing more?

Indo, I really like to have a creative outlet, and for right now its this Chibera. They have this open ended (and unlimited entry!) character contest, butI hve been informed that they will conti ue with other similar contests as they get closer to releasing the full game.

Since I am mostly studying and working, its nice to get some creative writing out :)

Well I hope you will do it more often. It is these type things that make Steemit more interesting.

I love this post, @ecoinstant!

You got me thinking over substantial matters.
