Two Weeks in Williamsburg - Grand Central Terminal (Travel Series Ep. 3)

in #story6 years ago (edited)

Upon serious reflection I can think of no other city in the US that offers more iconic experiences for your buck (or crypto) than New York City, it can be overwhelming. Many travelers make the mistake of trying to do much in a day and therefore don't enjoy any of it on a deep level. Raymi and I always try to pace ourselves, balancing our excursions into Manhattan in a way that allow us to see a few sites at our own leisurely pace.

Since we had plenty of daylight left after our stroll through Central Park we decided to walk on to Grand Central Terminal.

On our way from the southeastern tip of Central Park we passed by the The Plaza Hotel, one of the most distinguished (and expensive) hotels in the city. Room rates begin at almost $800 per night, excessive no matter what the price of Steem is...I think I'll stick to Airbnb.

As we walked south towards Grand Central we took in the spires of spectacular St. Patrick's Cathedral in all their glory.

Finally, we reached the impressive Grand Central Terminal. The site, and 42nd Street and Park Avenue has been a transportation hub since the 1870’s. The current Beaux Arts-inspired design replaced older structures and was built in phases between 1903 and 1913. Since then it’s gone through several restorations and expansions. As you can see, the building is a masterpiece of architectural design, both inside and out.

I can’t imagine how many people have passed under these soaring ceilings.

Seasoned Traveler Tips

There’s a special surprise lurking in Grand Central Terminal in an area framed by four archways enroute to the lower concourse. You can experience an amazing sound-broadcasting effect. If you and a friend stand at opposite ends of the underpass and one of you speaks towards the wall at a normal volume, the other person can hear you perfectly even though you are almost thirty two feet away and facing in the opposite direction. The stone walls and ceiling reflect the sound on a path across to the opposite side of the underpass. This is referred to as the Whispering Gallery or Whispering Walls.

Also, culinary creations from one of the best chefs on Earth can be sampled for under $10 a serving in the Grand Central Terminal's food court. We discovered award winning chef, Rene Redzepi, creator of the famed Danish restaurant NOMA, opened a pricey restaurant called Agern in the terminal. He also operates a food hall that offers options to fit any budget called Great Northern Food Hall.

I hope you enjoyed this journey!

Yours in the Chain,

Eric

I really love Grand Central and in fact the ceiling has inspired me for years. I'm one of those wierd people who walks around the station with my head in the clouds staring upward and not paying attention to what's in front of me.

Really nice post Eric!

Thank you @natureofbeing! I can see how you'd be staring upwards here. I did that so much during our visit my neck was sore. Lol.

Heading to NYC for the first time this summer. I'm excited :)

I totally enjoyed this journey. I could imagine it in my head and that's a huge motivation for me. I am glad you enjoyed it too, more so with her. That made it all the more enjoyable.

I am really fascinated with the architectural design. That is really massive and impressive.

I got more intrigued with the "Whispering Walls" sir. Wow. That is something!. I would absolutely love to see that and try that out.

New York has always been impressive. From so many journals i have read, it seem to be a bubbling and fun city, and ofcourse expensive too. Thank you for that wonderful tip you gave about people trying to try everything at once, thereby missing out on the fun. That is vital.

Thank you so much for sharing this to us all. Thank you for taking us along.

Thank you! I've really enjoyed writing these travel posts. It's like reliving the experience all over again.

Absolutely. Bursts of emotions and wonderful moments. I can totally relate to that. So glad you shared it with us sir.

Such a gem of a building and you couldn't have two better folks moving through the halls!!

Wow! What a great experience again.
You are one of the amazing travelers we have around here. You take your time to enjoy almost everything on offer wherever the journey takes you.. Lol

The echo you mentioned look magical. Lol

It does not have regard for distance.... Hahahahab

If I end up in UK, Grand Central Terminal would top the list of places to visit. I want to experience the magical echo myself... Lol

Thanks bud for the update.

I'm glad you enjoyed the post! Thanks for reading.

You are welcome, hope to see more of your traveling posts.... Smile

Nice shots. I’m digging the angles.

I appreciate it, my friend!

Wow some magnificent shots was staring at that the whole time amazing post :D

Wow what a side to behold, I couldn't even match this awesome photography, even if I had the chance, impressive Grand Central Terminal is amazing I mean I've never seem such heights, I mean for the panacea,

Obviously the hotel $800 per night is expensive, that's really off the books for me really, but what can I say New York is grand so much photography and sight seeing, you really enjoyed the trip lol you really so.

wow, the city really looks very beautiful @ericvancewalton, it seems like I really want to be able to fly to get a vacation to the US. The US city is the best, and the buildings there are so much better than where I live, which is why I really want to be able to vacation to the US, because I look on the internet, the US has many beautiful places for holidays, and I see a lot of photos on the internet it's really good, and the photo you're sharing also looks really good. Again I say it's really cool.

I think, your trip is really cool, you can be happy to enjoy all that with your family. It takes a lot of money to get there, and the cost of the hotel is also very expensive. Is it in the US now summer? I love the winter season, maybe later you will post pictures of snow beauty for all of us, I really want to see snow. Thanks for sharing @ericvancewalton, and hopefully you have a wonderful day... :)

Hi, @reynakarina! It's funny, most people here in the U.S. daydream about going to foreign destinations and consider them more beautiful. I'll never forget my first trip to Europe and how in awe I was of the history there. Summer's from June to October here in the US. Where are you from?

yes, I come from the country of indonesia, in my country live no winter, so from that I really want to see the beauty of snow, in fact I am very curious about snow, I see pictures on the internet about snow, and snow looks very beautiful. What month is winter there?

very happy if I can visit the grand central terminal, decorations and architects who managed to amaze the eye to want to step on the land U.s.a
maybe that's all I know from the attractiveness of usa, through the travel story you feel very interested to travel and enjoy the classic architecture mixed with modern.
thanks @ericvancewalton for your travel stories and incredible building photos
