Isabel Vasquez, called Izzy in colloquial situations, had thought the nightmare had stopped. It had been weeks since anything horrible or traumatic had occurred, and she had hoped that that was the end of it. However, tonight she had seen a series of eyes. Disembodied eyes. The first one had floated at a height equal to that of her own green eyes, and it had followed her around for six and a half hours. The nerve stem dangled behind it, and it never took its hazel iris off of her. She felt it watching her the whole time, even when her normal paths of movement put it behind her. For some reason it always seemed to be to the west of her, no matter what direction she was facing.

It had disappeared, and she felt relieved. Until the next day when she had gotten up and the drywall next to the bathroom door in her dorm room had blinked, and the eye between the odd, drywall lids had focused on her. She sat there in bed, quietly looking at the eye that never moved and never blinked after the initial one. The iris was blue with a red ring near the pupil. Izzy shivered and looked down at her hands. She traced the lines on her palms, first the left, and then the right. Then she balled up her fists and closed her eyes and counted to ten. Feeling calmer and braver, she looked again and found that the eye was gone. Shaking her head, she rose and began her day.

Izzy was what one would call a medium. Not professionally, of course. She was a business major with a minor in theology. She was also an orphan from Los Angeles with Mexican heritage. Her grandmother used to come to her and have long conversations with her. This all began after Abuela Vasquez’s funeral. The elderly lady had been bedridden since before Izzy had been born, but she had come to her on her own feet. Straight through the closed bedroom door, even.

Abuela Vasquez’s visits had been a positive effect of her ‘gift,’ but this was atypical. Often she was privy to shocking or terrifying images that no one else could see. As a child it didn’t take her long to stop telling people about the things she saw. The looks in their eyes were enough, but then they would whisper about her in the hallways at school and on the school bus. So, she suffered her terrors in silence, and beyond that her life was pretty normal. Except that before she moved to school, her ‘visions’ had suddenly gotten worse. They had become almost seamless and unending, just weeks and weeks of terrible sleep filled with nightmares and days and weeks spent cowering. It had ended after her first night at college.

Unfortunately, she thought as she doodled in class, it was back. She sighed and looked up at the professor. His sweater vest was patterned in eyeballs. They blinked. She shivered and looked back down at her notebook. It was then that she realized that she had drawn a disembodied eye. Fear had a tight grip on her core and she struggled to breathe. She struggled to look and act normal as she looked up at the professor again. His vest was the standard white and blue plaid it had been at the beginning of class. However, blood poured out of his empty eye sockets. Izzy choked back a scream.

She closed her eyes and began to count. She got to fifteen before she heard… something. Footsteps. Footsteps and weeping. She opened her eyes. The room was empty, and the lights were off. Cloud filtered sunlight lit the room as she peered about. The weeping sounded close, now. She looked up, and the professor was there, standing on the ceiling, eyeless. He sobbed, and then opened his mouth. A wail filled the room, but within his mouth were no teeth, and no tongue. Just a great black eye with a gleaming white pupil and an angry red iris inhabited the space between his lips. He reached for her…
