The main difference of the carabela is the hilt in the form of an "eagle's head," with a knob curled downward. Efes was characterized by an ordinary saber cross with spherical bulges at the ends, proto-patterns of which are known from the XII-XIII century. This type is not exclusively Polish.

Similar swords were used in different countries including Russia, Moldova, the Balkans, the Caucasus. On Poland, this type probably came from Turkey.

Polish carabiles differed in the design of the handle, which made them convenient for fencing and circular strikes.
In other countries, such sabers were used, mainly, by cavalry. Often, the attributes of the Polish nobility were decorative, richly decorated carabels.

Two types are distinguished according to the shape of the blade. The first was distinguished by a double-edged elm and an increase in the curvature to the point. The second clearly expressed elmani did not have a uniform round bend. In addition, the Poles refer to the sabers of the gadar to the carabels.

The blades of the carabel were most often imported - usually Turkish or Iranian, and in some cases - Solingen. The length of the blade, on average, was 77-86 cm, width - 2.7-3.3 cm, curvature - 7.0-9.5 cm, length of Elmani - 23.5-26.5 cm, distance from the center of impact to the center of gravity - 25,0-26,5 cm.
