"Criptomoneda" y "criptodivisa" son términos válidos, traducciones habituales del inglés "cryptocurrency", señala la Fundación del Español Urgente, promovida por la Agencia
En las noticias, las voces criptomoneda y criptodivisa aparecen con frecuencia en frases como "Criptomoneda: el futuro del dinero", "Criptomonedas: hasta un 767 % de rentabilidad en el 2016", "El próximo boom del bitcóin: un nuevo marco regulatorio para las criptodivisas".
El sustantivo inglés "cryptocurrency" puede traducirse al español por "criptomoneda" o "criptodivisa". El elemento compositivo "cripto-", que procede del griego clásico y significa 'oculto', está presente ya en otras palabras como "criptografía", "criptograma", etc., en las que este sentido de 'oculto' o 'secreto' equivale también a 'protegido'.
No hay razón para censurar que "cripto-" se una a las voces "moneda" y "divisa" para dar nombre a este medio digital de intercambio o dinero virtual. Por lo que los tres ejemplos anteriores pueden considerarse plenamente válidos.
