Rahmah El-Yunusiah : A mighty women from sumatra barat

in #story6 years ago (edited)

During this time we may only know R.A. Kartini from Jepara, Jawa tengah, as a pioneer of women's progress. Apparently in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, there is also a female figure who is equivalent to Kartini. He is Rahmah El-Yunusiah.

He was born on December 29, 1900 M in Padang Panjang, the youngest daughter of a kadi in districts Pandai Sikat. His father had died since he was a child, so he was raised by his mother in a religious family.

In his childhood, Rrahmah El-Yunusiah studied at Diniyah Scool, led by his elder brother, Zainuddin Sheikh El-Yunahah (1890-1924 AD), a young cleric who founded a modern school on October 10, 1915 which was the first school to attempt to change the Scool education system by insert the classic system as it is now.

As a smart and modern girl, she was dissatisfied with the educational system at Diniyah Scool, especially in treating female students. That fact prompted him to set up a girls-only school: Diniyah daughter. And since then, he has devoted himself to nurturing the school.

At first, the rahmah only teaches how to write and read patiently. When the number of students reaches 70 people, learning activities that originally took place in the outer portico of a mosque, moved to his own house. It was in the house that he made some classrooms and lodging for his students. Not only that, he also sacrificed all his wealth to finance the school diniyah daughter.

Apart from being a swordsman of women and educational leaders, Rahmah is also known as a hero of independence. In the time of revolution for example, he was the first person in Padang Panjang who raised the flag of Red and White in front of Diniyah Putri school building. At the start of the armed revolution Rahmah joined in defending independence, until he was captured by the Dutch in early 1949. He was detained for 3 months in the city of Padang. Earlier in 1945, he pioneered the formation of the people's security army which is now the national army of Indonesia.

In the age of independence, he also plunged into the political and social scene, without leaving the world of education. When the party masyumi (assembly syuro muslimin Indonesia) stood in 1945, he was elected chairman of the community masyumi Sumatra. In 1950 he pioneered the establishment of Pancasila law school as the forerunner of the university andalas. And when the masyumi emerged as the second winner of the election results of 1955 he was elected as a parliamentarian representing the masyumi.

Rahmah El-Yunusia is the pioneer of women's progress in Sumatra, as does R.A. Kartini in Jawa. In addition to educator figures he is also a freedom fighter. This mighty female character died on February 26, 1969, at the age of almost 70 years.
