Demi's tears

"Noo..oo..never...I'm keeping my baby..no one is hurting my baby" Demi screamed in the female ward, slightly embarrassing the doctor that stood in front of her . Almost immediately, she burst into fresh tears. The other patients in the ward looked at her briefly and mournfully. They had all heard. Demi kepy crying profusely. She had been like that for weeks. It was the first month of her second trimester and life had never been more terrible for her.

"I will advise you to talk to her, she will lose her life and that of the baby if she continues refusing to sign" the doctor said to Demi's husband and mother, before walking out of the ward.

Demi's husband was confused and frustrated as he tried to plead with his adamant wife. Everything was fine, they were doing well, how did they get to this point all of a sudden?

Months ago, they had been extremely excited to tie the knot. More excited were they when Demi became pregnant with their first child. Their nightmare had howevet begun in the 3rd month of her pregnancy. She had walked to the hospital to register for ante- natal when the sad news was broken to her. Her blood pressure was too high, above normal and the doctor had refused to let her go home despite her pleas. She was diagnosed of pre-eclampsia. A critical condition in pregnancy , where either the mother or baby is at risk of death, seizures or coma. It is a rare condition and in most cases sufferers are advised to terminate such pregnancy to save the life of the mother.

Brought back to the present by sudden gasps for breath made by his wife, Demi's husband began to panick, calling desperately for a nurse. Her mother burst into fresh tears.

Few minutes after, Demi's husband was signing the papers, and within a twinkle of an eye, Demi was wheeled into the labour ward with an oxygen tube in her face.

"Did you see him?" "were you able to look at him?" "how did he look?"

"He was a dead foetus Demi, I couldn't look ....." her husband responded sadly...
