This Guy Started an eBay Business, Pirate Radio Station, & Blog While in Prison

in #story5 years ago

Hey guys, hope you enjoy today's video, I found it fascinating. So one of the hottest categories of Youtube Channels right now is prison channels. Prison channels are essentially guys who've gotten out of prison who make Youtube Channels out of talking about their experiences in prison, telling stories, sharing advice, and doing some more fun videos like showing how they made prison "spreads" or meals in prison with commisary items.

Many of these channels have hundreds of thousands if not millions of views. Many of the guys behind these channels have also parlayed this into lines of merch, workout supplements and other businesses as well. Another common thing I notice is they are all entrepreneurs and hustlers.

To me this really highlights the concept of indepreneurship which is essentially the business of you. Making money off your knowledge, life experiences, etc. That could be sharing an expertise you have, telling stories, consulting, teaching, really anything.

Anyhow, while watching one of these prison channels I stumbled upon this interview Big Herck did with Bounce Back Life After Prison and I found it fascinating that while in prison he was able to launch a money making eBay store importing phones from China, he and his bunkie also started a pirate radio station they ran out of prison for over a year and also started creating content and made a website called Prisoners Gone Wild.

What this really brought home to me was the idea of doing what you can with what you have, essentially being resouceful. With the prison channels you have guys comming out of prison with nothing and with a felony on their record who've found a way to turn that into a positive and make money off it. And with the eBay stuff in prison, if someone can start a money making business within prison walls, what possibly could be a good excuse for you or I as far as why we havn't started something of our own?

Something a little different today but I hope you enjoy it.

Yeah I don't understand how these guys had access to all this stuff. I guess it depends what prison you are in and all that. I think Americans have a fascination with the prison system because we have more people incarcerated here than in any other nation in the world. They have even set quotas in some areas to make a certain amount of arrest. Just always going around looking for a problem half the time.

It is good this guy was able to keep busy and not just go in there and be completely depressed the entire time.

Hey buddy, sorry we havn't chatted in a bit, I've been spending a little less time on Steemit trying to actually make some money lately lol. I do want to get back spending more time on here though.

This dudes story is pretty fascinating but basically he had a relationship with a guard so she brought them in a wireless internet cared, one of his buddies worked in a prison shop where they had access to a computer so with that card I'm assuming they could access the internet outside the scope or eyes of prison officials and guards. The female guard was also helping him by receiving the packages from china and I'm assuming shipping off eBay packages as well.

You'r right there is a huge fascination with the prison system from the shows like locked up abroad, i almost got away with it, etc, etc, etc. I heard this guys story was also featured on an episode of i almost got away with it.

While I'm sure it could lead to bad stuff I think the idea of allowing prisoners more access to the internet and to starting businesses could be a good thing. If you give them something positive to do many would likely occupy themselves with making money online as opposed to causing trouble, they hopefully would wind up comming out with some marketable skills and also you could set something up where people making over x amount of money have to pay for their own prison stay so it could offset some of the costs.

I have had a harder time being on here a ton as well. There have just been other things to focus on and if I spend too much time here I get caught up in some of the drama related stuff on here.

My son was incarcerated for 7 months, for theft. While there, he had no internet access, nor did or does any of the other inmates. They were in jail to be punished, and the only money they made were doing prison chores. My son worked in the kitchen, he made a huge 10 cents an hour. Are you sure this guy wasn't holed up in his moms basement, or some country club. Totally fucking outrageous.
I think anyone that is motivated and takes that motivation and makes something good out of it is great, but when prisoners are allowed to do this... sorry, something I can't agree with. I didn't even watch the interview vids, couldn't bring myself to do it. Did find your post interesting though.

Hey @skiponline these days many prisons are giving the prisoners tablets and limited access to the internet so that is what prisons of the future are looking like. It can help them with job skills and allows them to better keep in touch with their families which I think is a good thing even if they are being punished as the families are also being punished and they did nothing wrong.

This guy from the interview had a CO bring him an internet card and was doing all this under the nose of the institution so this wasn't something that they allowed him to do. That said I could see an argument for allowing prisoners to do this type of stuff. It keeps them busy and out of trouble and potentially they could even use the money to pay for their own incarceration and they get to keep anything in excess of that to help get themselves setup when they get out.

In regards to prison and people being punished, I get that, however at the same time in the USA we have the highest incarceration rate in the world and many people are being "punished" for alot of bullshit and nonsense that's really just a waste of tax payers dollars so if someone was violent or commited crimes that hurt someone okay I get that but in regards to victimless crimes I think its kind of silly to even lock people up.

On a total side note our laws are so goofed up as well. Two people can commmit the identical crime and get very different sentences. My cousin was selling stolen stuff on eBay. He wound up getting 9 years because it was on eBay it adds all these charges for wire fraud and interstate stuff where as if he was selling this stuff locally for cash it would have been a slap on the wrist.

The guy in this story, he was being attacked by two guys, they jumped on his moving car while on drugs, one wound up getting run over. While a loss of life is terrible in my mind he really wasn't guilty of anything. The judge in his case sentenced him to 10 years but told him at sentencing had he gone to a jury trial he would have been acquitted. It just seems so silly that the same situation can result in 0 time vs 10 years. The whole system seems really goofed up

dayum, now I'm going to have to watch these interviews... Just kidding, I will give them a look. I do have to agree, giving the inmates certain privileges can keep them out of trouble, also give them a way to learn new skills.
