History is History

I once had a quote plagiarized by a well known writer. It was after 911 when the same groups that are now trying to tear down statues began complaining about a statue that did not yet exist. There was an actual photograph of three white fire fighters raising the American flag over the ruins of the world trade center wreckage after 911, and a statue was to be commissioned. But certain revisionist groups began to scream that we needed to add "diversity" so that the statue should feature minorities instead of all white guys - even though the actual history was factually otherwise. This angered me and many others. Why does the left feel the constant need to insert "diversity" into every facet of American life and history, even when it is not accurate or true.

My comment of the news article about this outrage was: "A photograph is a photograph. A statue is a statue. And history is history." [As an aside: That quote must have been decent because it was plagiarized in the well known authors articles. I was pretty amazed, but didn't report it as I guess I felt flattered and did not want to create trouble for the author because I liked him. ] What that means is that regardless of what the left screams for, they cannot alter facts and history. At least the real history. By screaming to change the statue to include "diversity", they created a false history. A lie.

It was the same thing that I noticed Barrack Hussein Obama doing when he falsely asserted that islam was woven into the fabric of American history. That is patently false. About the only thing islam contributed to American history is that the US marine corp was created to fight them - back when they were called the barbs and the barbary pirates were hijacking ships, looting them, and killing or enslaving those on board. Not exactly what I would call a positive reflection on islam.

Anyone who studies history knows that there is more to the story than the ignorant masses are taught. In fact, much of what the average person believes about history is wrong, or missing relevant information. Given the extraordinary number of factors both known and unknown, it would be virtually impossible to portray every event in history as completely accurate.

There are things that are impossible to know, such as the actual motivation of a historical figure since they are no longer around to ask. But a large part of the problem is that previous generations allow the screaming whiners of society to dictate what is preserved about history. Things like changing a statue to depict diversity even though it was not true. For this reason, I think it is more important than ever for people to take a stand to fight against false revision of history in the name of political correctness, diversity, or whatever leftist garbage of the day is in favor. We are not doing fture generations any favor by allowing a distorted and untrue version of history to be preserved.

Sort:

I do agree with you 100% on the statue issue. I think people often feel obligated to make stories, photos, etc., more 'diverse'. But sometimes, like in this photo, it is not 'diverse', and that's perfectly okay. It doesn't always mean there are racist powers at work.

I absolutely agree. History is history. You can't alter it to be more palatable to you and it's really disgusting to take heroes and complain that the men who were standing in a place where they were required to take action weren't "diverse" enough.

History is what it is. It's there to be studied and learned from, not erased and rewritten. If we do that, we are (not to plagiarize!) doomed to repeat it.

Amen! Falsifying history and everything else!
It's ironic, people have become so militant about positive ideals such as tolerance that it has actually become divisive:/

Well said!
