A Little Yellow Butterfly - Part One
Hi Steemians!
I have a non-traditional Mother's Day story for you. It is a bit too long to be in one post, so I have divided it into "more digestible" parts. Please feel free to make comments, ask questions or critique. The story is true and writing it helped me to find more peace with what happened. Now for the story:
Just as she arrived in the parking lot of Old Tuscan Studio, a delicate yellow butterfly raced over to meet the old red truck. As if delighted to see her, the butterfly circled around the truck three times before Cindy even got out and then started to follow her to the ticket booth. “Go away! Leave me alone!” Cindy yelled. “I don’t want to think about my mother today!”
This was the first Mother’s Day since Ruth had passed, and after feeling inundated by all the ads and hoopla around Mother’s Day teas, brunches … and all the restaurants, jewelers and florists trying to make a buck, Cindy had escaped to Old Tuscan Studio specifically to get away from Mother’s Day.
In an instant, she remembered that moment when Ruth died. Right after she finished reading Ruth’s favorite Bible verse, Psalms 23, Cindy took her sister by the hand and they escaped to the Butterfly House, only a few miles down the road. Cindy and Rhonda had been prisoners at the UNC Burn Center for a week, ever since Ruth had been helicoptered there.
Moving through the Butterfly House was like being in a sensuous warm bath, and Rhonda and Cindy soaked it all in. Their timing was perfect. A butterfly release sent all kinds of beautiful butterflies out and about and many of them landed on several of the house guests. The guide stated that this was the most social group of butterflies he had ever seen. Cindy replied; “That’s because they have some of my mother’s soul in them.” Rhonda nodded in agreement.
