Ulog # 079 | Walking to the Ateneo in Cumaná (more pictures added)

Greetings, everyone

Image of the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia (Cumaná's Castle) from the patio of the Ateneo

School year has started here and we are trying to keep our daughter busy in the afternoons. She will attend HS in the mornings. As you know she is an artist (she can write, draw, paint, sing, dance, and play several instruments) and even though we have done anything in our power to encourage and reinforce her talents, there are very places in our city where she can develop her inclinations.

The Ateneo is the first house on the left. In the background you can see Santa Ines church, one of Cumaná's emblematic religious structures.

We were told the local athenaeum had a good choir and neeed some female voices, so we figured that might work for her. She would mingle with her peers and educate her voice some more.

The place is not in its best shape, but there are still talented people trying to help youth find some sense of purpose; trying to infuse some artistic energy to this dilapidated town.

Among the few nice things we saw on the walls of this colonial house that is falling apart there was this painting by a local artist (J. F. Vargas 2003)

We found this cat in the entrance and had to give him some food. He was quite persuasive, to put it nicely.

My daughter stealing some minutes from the piano after choir rehearsal (she is not supposed to do that since she is not registered for piano lessons).

While we waited for our daughter I took some pictures around the former Pichincha square. The governor's "government palace" is just across the square

and next door we have the ruins of the administrative building.

Former Pichincha Movie Theater, now in ruins

This building was burned by a group of protestors led by a guy I attended college with. He eventually became, under this mediocracy, mayor or the city and governor of the state of Sucre.

In 20 years they had not have the decency of restoring the building to its former glory.

For years they have been working on remodeling the square. This will go down in history as the most expensive remodeling with the least impact. More than three years have passed since they "inaugurated" it and we can't see much green grass yet.

On our way back I took some pictures of the sunset.

Glad you are seeking out places that will help develop or are in line with your daughters artistic talents!

Lovely architecture - and it is a shame that they are not restoring that interesting looking building that was burnt!

Some beautiful sunset photos - thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much, @porters, for stopping by and commenting. The colonial architecture of our towns is admirable and inspiring to the eye, but it has been disappearing. Very few houses or buildings have been preserved or renovated. I'll post shortly about the house of one of our local poets, Andrés Eloy Blanco, who actually became a world figure in the 30s and 40s because he was also a politician, and whose house was turned into a museum, but as we could see yesterday in a short visit, it has lost much of its splendor.
This government of ours has been destructive both by actions and ommisions.

Such a shame to have a government that is destructive and not working towards seeing the country prosper! We have very weak leaders here and it can be very frustrating!

Thanks for stopping by, @porters
I guess it is a global crisis, that of leadership. Fortunatelly for some countries, things work and can be improved despite their problematic political leaders.

Your daughter is talented. Best of luck for her future endeavours.

Awesome sunset photo.

Thank you. We appreciate your stopping by. That last picture was my favorite.

Brilliant photography 🙏👌💐
