Thailand is filled with statues of figures in the Buddhist and Hindu religions. There are statues of Gods and Demi-gods and most are worshipped by the majority of the Thai population.

Many of the figures are prayed to for different reasons. Some for wealth, some for good health and some for an overall good life.

Lord Buddha is neither a God nor a demi-god and he should never be prayed to because he is only a man. However many people do pray to him because they think he can grant them favor. He cannot. He an only provide an example and wisdom on how to end suffering and reach a perfect state.

This is a statue of Buddha.
As you can see, it is in a beautiful location with a lake behind it Very calm and relaxing which is perfect for him.

Excellent short "photo" post, with some enlightening (pun intended) info and insights into Buddhism.

A few days ago, I was chatting with a Thai friend who owns a small tea / coffee shop. Outside the front door, there's the standard "spirit house."

She told me that Buddha (who supposedly resides in the spirit house) cared for her and protected her, but would get angry / upset if she did not behave.

Considering that she is a level-headed and reasonably intelligent woman, I was surprised to hear her state such mythical beliefs.

I'm glad to read your insights into the issue. It's good to realize that in Thailand, too, a more evolved and enlightened perspective is pervading society.

Yes Thais have many rituals much like Catholics, Some seem pretty off the wall.

Thanks for this and yes Thailand has added a healthy bit of mysticism to their Buddhist beliefs. This has mostly to do with the fact that in Thailand Buddhism and Hinduism have merged and many of the Hindu Gods and traditions have been handed down although mostly they have been changed by us Thais. Buddha did not buy into any of the mysticism part and only focused on using ways to get one to end suffering. Attaching to idols and rituals continues suffering because you will always be disappointed in the outcomes at some point. His was is simple to understand but difficult to follow because we are constantly faced with delusions and have weaknesses that have nothing to do with intelligence, but fear and tradition. Not easy though. I also have many of them that are difficult to let go of. Thanks.
