Yes, that is true in the UK as well - if you take over an abandoned house and live in it for around five years I think without anyone challenging you then you can claim it as your own. The sad part is because people realised this was empty, they broke in and stripped everything of value - then it was used as a drug den until kids smashed every window and door so it’s just open to the elements now.

5 years is quite short. I heard it's 20 years in some place and i think they abolish this for Singapore
