oooh look at that blue sky, although it's the calm after the storm you can tell from the road we had a big rain storm pass through. The weather in the UK is still mixed, very cold and a mixture of rain, sleet and snow right now.

IMG_5053.JPG

Middle of the road! Ok I'm cheating, this is on a bridge over the dual carriageway - but I was brave and didn't look down!

IMG_5054.JPG

So this used to be the old Halifax meeting rooms, but it shut down and then a few months later the Police found it was full of Cannabis plants rather then people meeting together!

IMG_5059.JPG

So just up the road to me is the Original Halifax Gibbet - I'm not sure the text is readable but you should be able to look up the history of the Halifax UK Gibbet. From when Halifax was a massive producer of cloth for the UK, their was also many people that would be out to steal the produced cloth for their own gain. And the Gibbet in Halifax was set up to disuade this theft - anyone caught stealing had their head...chopped off. So they wouldn't be doing it again. They had it right back in the old days, if someone steals from you - just lop their head off non of this messing around being nice to them or giving them the chance to make their case "Oh I didn't know I was stealing that from you, I thought it was mine".

IMG_5060.JPG

It's a nice piece of history for our town, and a timely reminder of how brutal justice used to be.

IMG_5061.JPG

Some may argue we should return to these times of having a physical deterrent of wrong doing, because a slap on the wrist or few months in jail is no deterrent compared to having your head...lopped off.

IMG_5062.JPG

Repeat offenders are all to common nowadays, but they would not be if they were in two pieces....it's brutal justice but at that time in our history it suited the community to stop widespread theft.

IMG_5065.JPG

So the Halifax Gibbet, on the road named Gibbet Street (surprisingly) exists as a reminder of how in the past our town dealt with people that would steal from the community.

IMG_5066.JPG

But it's not all bad, the daffodils are ready to flower.

IMG_5068.JPG

And the snow drops are widely around.

IMG_5036.JPG

Painting update, I put 5 hours in this Sunday and cleared a full tub of Sandtex exterior paint and a quarter tub of masonry paint.

new8march.JPG

Compare the same view with a few weeks back, it looks better I think? After 12 years in this building it's reached the point where ignoring the ageing interior decor is becoming hard. And we are getting more people visit - I don't want it to appear grotty while they look round. But in reality this building has had no interior painting since the early 1900's, and the external walls are classic Yorkshire stone.

IMG_5039.JPG

Oh and I mentioned the benches having tape measures fitted in from when this warehouse was used for garment manufacture - here you go.

IMG_5040.JPG

Good old British reliable measures.

IMG_5041.JPG

Just one example of the incredibly history of my coffee shed.

Thanks for the coffee token @c0ff33a

Wow that guillotine and punishment of Theft was extreme. Wonder how many heads got lopped off that were wrongly accused ??

I’m not sure about wrongly accused, back then it was a lot harder to hide your tracks. A bit of reading on the history below - apparently 100 lost their heads and it was actually dismantled by Cromwell - and recreated in the 1970’s

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Gibbet

Justice was brutal in old times indeed, keeping the population in fear. In my country, we had a ruler who has decreed choppping hands of thieves, not heads. Still brutal.

Brutal it is, but a good deterrent too. Nowadays it’s a slap on the wrist and petty fine.

Nice walk about town with historical evidence found off the beaten track. Lovely flowers starting to greet you on your walk.

Thank you very much, I’m so looking forward to spring and warm weather so I can get back out walking in the countryside.

I think we are all coming to terms with recent events and now trying to play a bit of catch up again.

That's a scary part of history.
I wondered how many heads really rolled.

It was a harsh punishment and apparently around 100 heads rolled for their thievery

It looks like its entertainment for some to watch. Playing tunes on bagpipes even. Thanks for the info.

That guillotine looked pretty scary and would sure be a deterrent.

Your coffee shed is looking bright and clean with the newly painted walls, Rob. It has a lot of history with the measuring rods still in the wood. Neat stuff that gives character to your building.

Thank you very much, there is so much history behind the building - but it’s a terrible bind and I keep something that dates way back to the early 1800’s even half clean. It’s important I think to retain our history though - and a balance between new modern architecture and the good old stone buildings of the past.

Thank you very much my friend, I hope you are well !COFFEEA
