My naughty plant purchases

in #succulents6 years ago

Indigenous cycad species require a permit to possess in South Africa. This is because so many have been removed from the wild for landscaping purposes that most of the local species are in danger of going extinct in the wild because they are generally extremely slow growing and live for hundreds, if not thousands of years. When removed, they take so long to replace themselves that they are disappearing and it is illegal to collect, sell or grow them without a permit.

Some sort of Encephalaros

I bought 2 seedlings from someone at a flea market who is growing them from seed. She isn't providing permits, so I will have to apply for one. It shouldn't be a problem to get a permit because these are grown from seed and although I don't know the exact species, it isn't a critically endangered one.

Although cycads are always referred to as living fossils because cycad species were around in the time of the dinosaurs, genetic studies have shown that they aren't actually ancient survivors but modern plants that closely resemble ancient plants found in the fossil record. Sadly, cycads are once more on the verge of extinction.

These are generally very slow-growing plants and they have a caudex - a swollen stem base and root which makes them succulent plants and they are mostly grown like succulents although it will be years before my plants look like much.

Still got a long way to go before it looks like dinosaur food

They are definitely very interesting plants-- much luck with growing your two. I had to do a quick Google search to see what all the fuss is about... it's sad that people are so prone to just "strip nature" for their own benefit.

=^..^=

The saddest part of the stripping is that transplanted wild plants often die. They need to be left where they are and other methods of propagation tried

Depending on where the seed was collected I don't see a problem with the purchase. Happy growing I say!

For sure! It's just easier to get plants with permits because then you don't have to go through the pain of doing it yourself

Maybe if we "relaxed" the magnetic field of our planet for a few more millenia, your plant could become a giant again and feed a LOAD of dinosaurs!?! ;)

Thanks a lot for all this information, good luck with your special plants as well, namaste :)

A beautiful plant!
I first see and hear about it.
It is necessary to read.
To you on the contrary should say thanks, because with the help of such as you - a rare species of vegetation is preserved !!!
Good luck !!!

Thank you. I don't mind if it is grown from seed from a plant in someone's garden but I am against removing them from nature

I agree with you!

@nikv thanks for the share

Cool plant. Do they enforce the law for not having a permit? What happens if you get caught with plants without a permit?

The permit system is to discourage removal of wild plants but they don't come checking, unless someone reports it. Depending on the type of plants and their sizes, you could be looking at massive fines (as in millions) and/or jail time

Hola @nikv
Me pusiste a googlear. jijijiji

Cycads are one of my favourite plants.

Mine, too. This is the nicest part of finally having my own home, I can grow plants outdoors without worrying about how they will fare if they have to move

So good to read from you @nikv

Now I'm beginning to learn a thing or two about SA

They are beautiful looking cycads.

Thank you, I have a real soft spot for them
