Circular economy - reuse and recycle

in #sustainability6 years ago (edited)

The concept of circular economy, as opposed to linear economy, is that material and energy are reused and recycled after use. One way of achieving this is to not throw away items you don't want anymore. Instead they can be resold in the second hand market. This week I went to the local Red Cross with a bag of stuff I don't need anymore. The Red Cross in Sweden runs a lot of second hand stores to help finance its activities. Other benefits are that people with less money can buy what the need, and that some of the staff are persons that get job and language training. When leaving things to the Red Cross, for some reasons, I always check out the store. So also this time. This time I came home with some books. One of them about Pikettys economical theory for the 21:st century. A perfect example of circular economy!

I believe there's a website about second-hand books, like you choose a spot to leave your book and you get another... I don't remember its name but if you're interested I can ask someone

That is so nice of you! Thankyou! But have to say that my current situation is that I have more access to books than time to read them! But sounds like something a friend of mine picked up while living in London. When you finished a book you just placed it where somebody else could find it, like in a coffee shop or in the train. Usually with a note sticking out saying "please take me home"!

In some industries the 2nd hand market is actually more profitable than the 1st hand market, look at the auto industry for instance, not alot of people buy new cars from manufactures but rather refurbished cars from 2nd hand car deals.
The circular economy can create a cyclic source of income as opposed to the linear economy.
