Savarin (Rijswijk, Netherlands): A Tasteem review

This time, I'm presenting a restaurant that is pretty classy! It's a place that presents a special high tea package with a twist... now, normally I'm not a fan of high tea, but this was a pretty engaging twist!

The Space

Coming in off the highway and the main street, there is a car park outside... however, it can be a touch confusing where to go. The place is actually home to a Hotel, a Spa AND the Restaurant. The one you want is the obviously the restaurant, which is the building that looks like the photo above!

When you first step into the restaurant, you are immediately greeted and asked if you are ready to take your place (reservations for high tea as required) or if you want to wait for the rest of your party. Well, this time we had to wait for a couple of the others, so we took some time out in this lovely and well-stocked bar area!

When you are ready, you are all ushered into the restaurant area. Make no mistake, this is a fancy place! I'm happy I dressed up for the occasion! Although, if I didn't... the restaurant throwing me out would be the least of my problems...

The Menu

I'm sure that there is a menu for the evening meals, which would be the more traditional a la carte sort of thing... however, we came during the daytime (afternoon) high tea session, which is a strictly set menu. However, if you had dietary requirements, they could try and cater to that. We didn't...

The Food

It's not High Tea without tea! The selection was actually really good, with every person getting their own teapot that was constantly refilled or changed if you wanted to change the tea. It really was so good that I forgot that I'm a coffee drinker.... my favourite for the afternoon was the 4 red fruits black tea (second from the left on the top row).

So, this is the traditional part of the High Tea. Lots of little nibbles, ranging from sandwiches to quiches. All of which was top quality stuff... although, there was an egg salad sandwich that I wasn't so fond of, but that is me... (this was the serving for 4 people).

Next was the little twist. A little hot "main" course. Fish (I can't remember what, Cod I think) with an Asparagus puree and a Pumpkin soup side. All of which was very nice! I ended up eating two portions, as the other people will starting to fill up from the first session.

IMG_20190106_154730.jpg

... and here is where I regretted eating so much fish! The dessert course, pictured is the serving for two people. This is a strictly go slow part of the meal! All the tasties on display were very rich but oh so tasty! The sort of thing where you just take it slowly and with small bites!

... and if that wasn't enough! One last finisher... to finish me off! Pinapples in a mango pudding. Wow!

The Experience

In total, we took about three hours to eat and drink. You will need that time unless you plan on feeling sick! The food was really great, but you do have to pace yourself. Likewise, the tea (and eventually coffee) was top-notch as well.

It's a touch on the pricy side of things, and you will have to wear pants (or at least dress up...).... but it is worth it for a really nice afternoon out.

The staff were also incredibly friendly and the whole experience was high quality. For the High Tea, you NEED a reservation. The dining area is not that big, and when we were there it was packed.

I would definitely reccomend this place for a special afternoon with that special person!

Thank you for the curation! Much appreciated!

Dear @bengy,

Its amazing that you guys drink tea with food! In our side of the world, we use these

This is an yixing pot which should only be used to brew one type of tea. I personally do not add milk or sugar to my tea and, I drink it straight from these tiny cups!

On my visits to China, I've had a few of these tea drinking events! It's really nice, and the tea pets are great... especially the ones that spout water!

You should have bought something that changes colors and spouts water. Traditionally, tea pets were used to check the water's temperature. Thus, the color changing ones!

Oh, checking temperature! That makes sense now!

Tea pets were excess clay that potters would fondly mold into mythical creatures in ancient China. What they do is pour a bit of water and depending on the feature, either the tea pet will change colors or, they will emit steem- designed specifically when the water reaches a certain temperature.

It was also considered lucky to have one or more in your tea tray and, we "raise" them. Meaning, the left over tea gets poured over the tea pet. Eventually,it would absorb the flavour and aroma of the tea that at the beginning of every tea ceremony, when hot water is poured in it, it will release these in the air adding delight to the participants.

Very good review @bengy. I like how you used The Alliance markers in the body. And your pictures and descriptions are very good. I gained 5 lbs just reading about all those desserts. I can imagine it did take 3 hours to get through all of that.

I like that Alliance marker... it's a nice way of showing the flag, and doing it a touch more subtly than the footer at the bottom!

Those desserts... oh my gosh.. they were incredibly decadent!

Thanks, glad you liked it!

looks yummy, and sounds like you had a lovey time.

Oh, we were all stuffed silly afterwards.... needed a good nap!

Oh, it was great... but so much... we had very fat bellies!

The high tea looks so lovely! And those quiches! Look amazing!

It really was great! Who knew that so much little snacks could be so filling!

Looks like it is worth a visit!
Cheers,
Peter

Just come hungry and eat slow!

Excellent review, it makes my mouth water...

But... are there real restaurants in the Netherlands? I thought they had a Magic Mushroom and Space Cake based diet! 😂 😂 😂

I'd like to invite you to participate on my Art Curation Initiative #9

LOL, there are those cafes as well! I'm not really quite so familiar with them!

The place is really classy and that food really look delicious.

It was, and the girls really liked dressing up for it! The food was great, but so much and so rich!
