The Craven Bakery - A Tasteem Review

I have had my eye on this bakery in the market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire for a while now.

Working in a semi-rural area has its advantages and one is the plethora of independent shops.

They can survive in places like this and these out of the way towns appear to be the last refuge in the United Kingdom of the genuine no-chain stores.

Tuesdays are a good day to visit bakeries. Closer to the weekend and the shop could be full and bad for my photographs.

There’s always an opportunity to chat with the owners too if it’s empty.

IMG_4514.jpg

As per normal I was getting strange looks for photographing cakes and pasties from both passers by and the owners.

I quickly informed them I was a writer and would be generating a review of their store.

It always works, and they relaxed dodging out of the way of my camera phone.

There’s so many who don’t like to be photographed. It’s not like I’m stealing their souls away!

IMG_4520.jpg

I was hungry and decided to grab a Cheese & Onion Pasty, as well as several cakes.

IMG_4515.jpg

Flapjacks, Bakewell Slices, Eccles cakes..... there was plenty of choice and at good prices too.

IMG_4516.jpg

Some things were individually wrapped in cellophane, a nice touch and more hygienic than most other places.

IMG_4518.jpg

Made to order sandwiches were on the cards too, ask and they will make you whatever you order.

IMG_4519.jpg

The pastie was decent enough and with me going a little late there was not much left on the hot counter.

The shopkeepers offered to microwave other pies and pasties but then you get a soggy mess, no thanks!

IMG_4522.jpg

I photographed the Raspberry slice separately as I took it into the office so I could devour it with a coffee later in the afternoon.

It was good and filling with plenty of that stuff that’s bad for us, sugar.

IMG_4525.jpg

The Jam slice, Almond slice and Coconut round with a jammy middle are just about to be eaten between myself and my family.

I’m having the latter one as I’m a bit partial to coconut.

It cost me £4.55 for my lunch (the pastie) and 4 cakes. Try that at Starbucks or Costa!

The Craven Bakery is not an over fanciful place, more a down to earth old fashioned cake shop with suitable down to earth prices.

You can get a lot for your money at these establishments and while they may not look as appetising as your Patisserie Valerie’s, they have a place.

If you are looking for something less expensive but just as edible you can get it here, and as a bonus walk away with change.

I have a weakness for good bakeries @slobberchops, these goodies look homemade and delicious! Love the sandwich concept of choosing one's own fillings.
Nice review!

Thanks @lizelle, the sandwich concept is quite common here, but I wanted to point it out. I added the review to their Facebook page.

Maybe it will give them a few more customers. I like these little bakeries that are none chains.

Sad really, that you have to go to some godforsaken suburb to find a real shop. I live in the old working class and immigrant first stop quarter (a nice and peaceful place except when you see it through a TV lens), and as the local gangsters have kept they prices a bit down the place now flourish with hipster shops. Italien and Chinese tourists with questionable bicycle skills cycles out here to experience some real shops. Like everywhere else Copenhagen city centre is now an H&M shop.

Most places are H&M shop's here now. You need to go to the seedier parts of cities and large towns to find the more interestnig places. From what you are saying it's just the same there.

It is indeed. The internet has also taken its toll.

I think it is interesting that the bakery had a deli counter. You just don't see that kind of stuff in the US really. Maybe in the larger cities I guess. It is usually just the sweet stuff though, none of the savory things like they seem to serve there. Very nice review!

I get a different perspective from non UK people. Always interesting what you have to say. Its normal to me!

Four cakes! Livin up to the name there. Good effort.

Seems like a really nice bakery, a clean one too and you are right, the prizes are more than ok when it comes for receiving your money's worth. Everything you photographed looks delicious.

That just absolutely looks like my kind of place. I probably gained weight just looking at (or dreaming of more likely) some of those pastries.

What a great find.

Pasties and pies are some of the things I missed most when living in the US. Have you ever seen them in your travels?
